Live-action remakes of Walt Disney Classics

I've just been watching 101 Dalmations on DVD, which I haven't seen since it's cinema release. It is a good film, and a good adaption of one of the lesser popular Walt Disney Classics. Glenn Close is especially effective as Cruella - which got me thinking.

Would other WDCs work as live-action films? 101 was special as it is set in the real world - most of the popular animated features are fairytales or folk stories. But Close really bought Cruella to life, and I think I prefer her interpretation better than the animated Cruella - if thats possible.

I got thinking about live action remakes of Snow White (I think this wouldn't be too bad, but it would be iffy recreating the dwarves), Cinderella (which has no proper villain and lacks stodgy film material in my opinion - most of the magic comes from the animation), possibly Sleeping Beauty could adapt well.

Some of the more modern WDCs as well - The Little Mermaid could only be done two ways, extremely well done or extremely tackily, and I can envision a breath-takingly realistic CG of the Beast dancing with a brunette actress as Belle in an adaption of BatB. I think Aladdin could be done well.

    Any thoughts?

well, you'r iffy on the dwarves and i say force perspective....

my promblem would be people trying to compare LOTR dwarves to snow white dwarves and any more kids you can think of....but force perspective could let them get away with it

Why not just hire actual little people for the parts? I don't understand why there has to be forced perspective, or any problem along those lines.

And Cinderella had three villans, the step mother and step sisters. They weren't feloneous enough to be "proper" villans? I think trying to keep someone in slavery and thwart true love is plenty evil enough.

I wonder what Who Framed Roger Rabbit would've looked like completely live action...

    I shudder to think.

I would love to see a live action "The Black Cauldron." But. I won't hold my breath.

Re: Live-action remakes of Walt Disney Classics

I dunno.. call me old fashioned, but I think that the films were animated to bring out the entire potential of the characters. There is just so much fantasy in movies like Beauty and the Beast, the Little Mermaid, Snow White, Aladdin, etc. I don't that could be fully utilized in a live-action film. Not only that, but you may devistate little children who see such characters and have a problem with them portayed any other way. I know I was one of those kids who was sad when pop singers with voices other than Aladdin and Jasmine sang "A Whole New World" during the credits.

But I agree, 101 was an adorable live-action film.
