GardenWalk gets green light - Orange County Register, 4/12/06

Workers are poised to begin construction as early as next month on a long-awaited outdoor mall and hotel complex near Disneyland, now that the City Council has approved expansion plans.

On Tuesday night, council members voted 5-0 to grant a request for GardenWalk to add hotels and shops to its plans, first discussed about eight years ago.

"It's an asset we've been waiting for – for many years – so we can extend and expand our convention business," Councilman Richard Chavez said.

GardenWalk plans to sell trendy attire at shops such as White House/Black Market and offer upscale dining options, including the Cheesecake Factory, when the first phase is set to open in October 2007.

Agreements with three hotels are expected in about 30 days, said Bill Stone, a principal in Excel Realty Holdings LLC of San Diego, one of three companies in the mall. One hotel could offer indoor and outdoor water parks.

I wonder who might be thinking of building a hotel with a water park.

I know that Cedar Fair, L.P. has stated many times they want to expand that part of their business.

I wonder how this will affect traffic in the area.

And forget the Cheesecake factory, there will be a McCormick and Schmick's!!!!!!

Looks like Disney hotels are getting some competition. Who knows...maybe Disney will sign up for a hotel? haha. But seriously, I'm glad this thing has finally been approved.

FINALLY... I think the first time I saw that Gardenwalk walls was in 2000. I was still working at DCA. I hope it doesnt become liek The Block.. I used to love that place but now the crowd kills it for me. Hopefully Garden walk will be a bit more upscale for the area. Good job City of Anaheim...

Oh, The Block is agitating. It definitely won't be The Block if White House/Black Market is going in there. That's a very genteel store, very unlike the hard-edged stores of the grating Block.

DD is going to be scrambling to catch up. Cheesecake Factory outdoes any restaurants currently in DD. It should have really gone in at DD.

DD had best get to work on opening a 24-hour, or near late night, deli ala Katella.

Because you know there will most assuredly be one at Garden Walk.
