Disney officials announced Tuesday that they are making changes to its "Mission: Space" attraction at Epcot, Local 6 News has learned.

Beginning this summer, Epcot guests will have two options when it comes to the ride; they can either go on the current attraction or a new version which provides a milder experience, according to the report.

Wow. I've mentioned this idea, but I never thought in a million years they'd actually do something like that.

In the new version, the spinning centrifuge will be turned off for guests who are prone to motion sickness or have other conditions.
Wonder how that can work? I was thinking they could just make it spin more slowly, not that they would turn it off altogether.

Here's another article from Forbs: http://www.forbes.com/technology/fee...ap2715924.html

Walt Disney World said Tuesday that it will offer another, tamer version of its Mission: Space attraction, less than three weeks after a woman became ill on the ride and later died.

I find the original version tame.. yet thrilling. I love Mission: Space.

Eager to see how a toned-down version of the ride will work. Perhaps less force in the centrifuge? No G-Forces at all? Perhaps just the loss of the sensation of take-off, which is the hardest on the body? Hmmm.... Hopefully the modified version will not lose the sense of flight. It really is an incredible simulation.

    Interesting.

I didn't find a problem at all with Mission:SPACE when I visited WDW. I really enjoyed it. I thought the video could have been better - the graphics weren't too spectacular.. but aside from that the ride, the g-forces, the experience - it was all fine. Its interesting how it affects other people.

When asked if the change was being made because of recent events, Disney spokeswoman Kim Prunty responded, "The answer is no.

"We are doing this for three reasons: to enable even more guests to experience the attraction; to provide an alternative that may be more suited for some guests, such as those who are prone to motion sickness or have other conditions; and to further encourage all guests to carefully consider and heed posted health warnings."

The move is being welcomed by theme park analysts and ride safety proponents.

"It sounds like a reasonable step for a self-regulated park to take," said Kathy Fackler, founder and president of SaferParks, a California-based organization crusading for independent ride safety reviews.

Leave it to Disney to find a solution that keeps most everyone happy! This is a great compromise IMO.

I'm still not getting on the ride though. Even the teacups make me hurl.

Exactly. What next, non-spinning teacups? Non-moving horses on the carousel? A dropless ToT? Dinosaur without all the loud noises and scary effects? This is rediculous. The attraction was meant to be experienced one way and should only be experienced that way imo.

LOL. I'll bet the teacups are worse than M:S for making you hurl! The teacups are the only DL ride that I will never, EVER do.

Re: Disney Changing 'Mission: Space' Ride- WKMG- 5/2/06

Due Dilligence means they must accept liability to make the ride as safe as possible for all riders. This is just one more step to make the ride safer for most riders... The alternative is to shut the ride down...

Tea Cups is an open ride and being such you can see the nature of intensity of the ride before boarding. Most people aren't aware of how their bodies will respond to centrifuges... Even Nasa doesn't which is why they carefully monitor vitals of astronauts even in simulation.

It is better, for obvious reasons to offer this second option which will not only bring more access to riders with health problems that are related to disablity: (which they need to do anyway under the American Disablities Act.)

It's a wise move all the way around.
