    In Defense of Uncle Remus...

In Defense of Disney's Uncle Remus... (01.21.05)

Song of the South is a reaffirming story of the bond between two friends that refuse to be separated by race, class, age -- a friendship that is forged and held against all odds. Merlin Jones makes a case for the release of Walt Disney's suppressed classic.

Hey! I've actually been to songofthesouth.net a few times before... very well done! I would love to see this film as I've never had the pleasure of doing so... but I used to have a book about Brer Rabbit and his tales when I was little. I very distinctly remember my uncle reading to me about the tar baby. Its amazing that one of the most major attractions both DL and MK is based on a movie a good majority of the people riding it have never seen, let alone heard of.

I barely remember seeing this movie. Back in the day when I used to work in a video store we actually had it for rent & that's how I was able to see it. It was a little dated but I thought it was done rather well. I'm still not clear on why everyone makes such a stink out of the story. But what's even odder is the Zippidy Do Dah song!! People love that song and have no idea where it came from.

    Hooray for Merlin!

who cares if nobody knows were Splash came from?

I actualy enjoy that the attraction can stand on it's own legs and not have people claiming that it rely's on the movie tie in to work

I would love to see this movie again, I hope soon, How are they going to change it? Why can't they just release another version of it, One with a original version on the back of the disc or part of special features. They do it with Disney Treasures Pluto, and Wartime with Donald Duck. Geez it was the time period.

I have the movie through some obcure internet sight. It looks like a bootleg, but anyway, the movie is fairly touchy. I found it to be offensive, and kids today would react in a strange manner if it were released. I suppose if it were released in a "treasure" format, and not a special edition dvd it would be ok. I think it's more for the nostalgic Disney Fans as opposed to younger generation children... References like "Tar Baby", the mammy look of some of the characters and even the speech patterns are very touchy. Great story, but I think it is a little too offensive to be marketed to the mainstream.
