ELYSBURG — Fun, food and fantasy were far from the minds of employees at Knoebels Amusement Resort Wednesday as they struggled to clean up from raging flood waters that swept debris to all ends of the swamped park.

The park, as has happened in the past, was inundated Tuesday night into Wednesday with flood waters that rose as high as the covered bridge, leaving a good section of the park’s center under water.

The resort’s cottages and camping area also had to be evacuated Tuesday night.

Flooding is common at Pennsylvania’s largest free-amusement park, where the South Branch of Roaring Creek and Mugsers Run converge, but Wednesday’s water levels will surely be remembered for a long time to come.

Looking at the park’s covered bridge, where raging, chocolate-colored water pounded the span, Joe Muscato, Knoebels’ director of public relations, said that at 6 p.m. Tuesday, park officials were under the impression the flooding would resemble Ivan, which they didn’t consider to be too bad. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case
