    Angelina and Brad collaborate again...

Angelina Jolie Has A Mighty Heart

    Variety
    July 13, 2006

Angelina Jolie will play Mariane Pearl in A Mighty Heart, an adaptation of Pearl's memoir about the kidnapping and murder of her journalist husband Daniel Pearl by Pakistani militants.

The film is coming together quickly at Paramount Vantage, with Michael Winterbottom finalizing a deal to direct. Brad Pitt's Plan B is producing, as is Winterbottom's producing partner, Andrew Eaton.

Shooting will begin within the next five weeks from a script by Laurence Coriat and Winterbottom.

The memoir details Pearl's search to locate her husband after he went missing in Pakistan. Also a journalist, Pearl was pregnant at the time. The drama ended as Pearl was murdered by his abductors, suspected to be Muslim terrorists tied to Al Qaeda.

The project will be Jolie's first live-action work since giving birth. She signed a deal last week to voice Tigress in DreamWorks Animations' Kung Fu Panda.

Angelina Jolie to star in Brad Pitt-produced film

Jolie and Pitt first teamed up in the film Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

NEW YORK (AP) — Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, whose relationship was spawned on a film set, will again work together — this time on a movie based on the life of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan.

Jolie will star as Pearl's wife, Mariane Pearl, in an adaptation of her book, A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl, it was announced Thursday. Pitt will produce the film, directed by Michael Winterbottom.

In an ironic twist, the movie will be produced by Revolution Films and Plan B, the production company Pitt and his ex-wife, Jennifer Aniston, founded. Pitt and Aniston, who were divorced last year, remain co-owners of the company.

It is the first announced on-screen role for Jolie, 31, since the birth of daughter Shiloh Nouvel, born in Namibia in May. The couple have two older children, 18-month-old Zahara, adopted from Ethiopia, and 4-year-old Maddox, adopted from Cambodia.

Pitt, 42, and Jolie first collaborated as co-stars in last year's Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
"I am delighted that Angelina Jolie will be playing my role in the adaptation of my book," Pearl said in a statement. "I deeply admire her work and what she is committed to."
Neither a start date for shooting nor an estimated release date for the film, which will be produced and distributed by Paramount Vantage were announced. There was no announcement about who would play Daniel Pearl.

The movie will be based on Mariane Pearl's account of her husband's abduction in Karachi, Pakistan, while researching a story on Islamic militancy. Months later, his beheaded body was found in a shallow grave in a compound on the outskirts of Karachi.

Pitt, who is producing a slew of upcoming films, will next star in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Babel and as Jesse James in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
Jolie will next be seen in The Good Shepherd, directed by Robert De Niro. She will also lend her voice to two animated features: Beowulf and Kung Fu Panda.

In producing A Mighty Heart, Pitt is joined by Dede Gardner of Plan B and Andrew
    Eaton of Revolution Films.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have created a new charitable foundation to aid humanitarian causes across the globe, a spokesman for the couple tells PEOPLE.

The newly formed Jolie/Pitt Foundation is giving away $ 2 million $1 to the Global Action for Children and $1 million to Doctors Without Borders, to help families affected by HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty.

"Angelina and Brad are committed to using their resources to help the world's most vulnerable people," their spokesman, Trevor Neilson, tells PEOPLE. "These two organizations are focusing on crises that receive far too little attention and Angelina and Brad are happy to do their part to help."

Jolie and Pitt are no strangers to global activism, and they have traveled together to Pakistan, among other countries, as part of Jolie's work as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. High Commission for Refugees.

Jennifer Delaney, the U.S. director for Global Action for Children, expressed gratitude for the donation, and told the Associated Press: "Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt not only care, but more important, are taking concrete action to address the fact that there will be 20 million children orphaned by AIDS by 2010, and millions more orphaned by tuberculosis, malaria and conflict or whose parents are sick and dying."

Battling Terror, With Paparazzi in Tow

Angelina Jolie as Mariane Pearl in the docudrama “A Mighty Heart.”

    Agence France-Presse
“A Mighty Heart” concerns the murder of
the Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

A FRAUGHT conversation is taking place around a large, circular dining table in this town in western India. Angry voices overlap. The talk ricochets among jihadis, kidnapping, sensationalist press reports and the somewhat sinister role played by a secret government agency in all of this. A child’s voice breaks the tension. He is 5, has spiky hair artfully arranged to defy gravity and conveys the nonchalance of someone not easily impressed. “Where’s my mom?” he asks.

Mom in this case is Angelina Jolie, Academy Award-winning actress, good will ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency and co-founder of the celebrity entity known as Brangelina. Ms. Jolie’s relationship with Brad Pitt occupies so much global media space that their first child together, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, was immortalized at the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in New York when she was only eight weeks old.

But here Ms. Jolie seems shorn of every title. She is wearing a shapeless blue-gray tunic with gray track pants. Her hair is pulled back with a few curling ringlets falling around her face. She wears little makeup. Shattering her on-screen sex-goddess-with-a-gun image, she is trussed up to look 6 months pregnant. Ms. Jolie turns to her son Maddox and gently says, “I’m working, O.K.?”

The job at hand involves portraying Mariane Pearl in “A Mighty Heart,” a movie tentatively scheduled for release next June by Paramount Vantage. The film is based on Ms. Pearl’s book about her husband, Daniel Pearl, the South Asia bureau chief of The Wall Street Journal who in January 2002 was kidnapped by jihadis in Pakistan and eventually beheaded on camera.

The book, written with Sarah Crichton, focuses on the four weeks of investigation, negotiations and leads that preceded a horrific end.

It is a harrowing but inspiring account of one woman’s struggle with overwhelming tragedy and her refusal to give in to prejudice. “Mariane has all the reasons in the world to be blinded by hate, but she has chosen not to be,” Ms. Jolie said in an interview. “We are living in a time when there is a lot of anger and misunderstanding. She is really a beautiful example to all of us of what we should stay focused on.”

Events described in the book take place mostly in a house in Karachi where an unlikely investigative team huddled together. This included Ms. Pearl; Asra Q. Nomani, Daniel Pearl’s friend and colleague from The Journal; a Pakistani police officer identified only as Captain; and Randall Bennett, a tough-talking American regional security officer.

The film was originally meant to be shot in Pakistan, but security concerns and visa delays relocated the main shoot to India. So a sprawling bungalow in a tree-lined gated colony called Sindh Society (locals have since renamed it Brangelina Society) in Pune, a growing information technology town, substituted for Zamzama Street in Karachi. Despite the presence of Ms. Jolie, Mr. Pitt (whose company, Plan B, is co-producing) and an international crew led by the director Michael Winterbottom, there were no trailers, no crowds, no glamour — very little sense that a picture with a big Hollywood star was under way.
