LAS VEGAS, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Boyd Gaming Corporation (NYSE: BYD) today announced that it is planning to close the Stardust Resort and Casino on Wednesday, November 1, 2006. I'm personally going to be sad to see it go. I really enjoyed my stay when I was there and would gladly go back! Nothing in Vegas lasts for too long, huh?

Re: Say Goodbye to Vegas' Stardust Hotel

Las Vegas's idea of historical preservation is to take a picture of an old hotel while we demolish it.

The Stardust had a good run. It's been around for about 50 years. Time to move on to something more modern and profitable.

The Boyd Group (which owns the Stardust) has done good by their employees though. They announced in January that the closure would happen some time late this year to give their staff time to prepare for it. The most recent announcement just finalized the date. Boyd is also making the effort to place Stardust employees at their other properties in Las Vegas. Those who leave the company, but stay at the Stardust to the very end, are getting generous severance packages.

The Stardust was where I met the Mythbusters at a conference in January. It was announced even before January that the Stardust would be blown up for a new shopping and hotel complex, more in line with the modern vegas. I loved the Stardust, however. Compared to hotels across the street, it was clean and had a lot to offer for the price.

Actually, the bikini bull riders are at Gilley's, just up the street (the next block north!)

Re: Say Goodbye to Vegas' Stardust Hotel

I have memories of The Stardust Hotel that go back to the '60s. Stayed there many times and watched it expand over the years. They had motel type rooms that were two stories in the very rear of the parking lot that had a $12 per night rate.

The Lido de Paris was a fixture in their showroom for many years and I read a few weeks ago that they were having a reunion of former Vegas Showgirls and it was being held in The Stardust. Then almost immediately following that they were going to demolish the structure.

Gilley's is at the Frontier, which will also be torn down one of these days when Trump builds his Las Vegas tower.

How sad. I never stayed there but didn't they film that Saved by the Bell Wedding movie at that hotel?

That "motel type" structure is still there, and I believe they are referred to as the "garden rooms"....and when I stayed there last time we had booked one of those, but they are so dilapidated that even the woman at check in was saying "you don't want to stay there" and upgraded us for free to one of the towers...the older tower...but we had a balcony.

And now I'm sad that the Frontier is leaving soon, too. You can't beat the mud wrestling and $1 beers and margaritas. All of the casinos that I liked and won the most at are being demolished...*le sigh*

I never stayed at the Stardust, but I won some money there one rainy day...

The Sarhara is pretty up to date now, with their new pool and roller coaster.

I think I need a Vegas fix soon!

Re: Say Goodbye to Vegas' Stardust Hotel

I miss old school Vegas. The Vegas where it was WAY cheaper to go Sunday through Thursday (and by cheap I mean $29 rooms at a nice hotel). I miss all the old hotels too, like the Sands, The Landmark, and now soon to be gone Stardust. I miss the days where I could actually AFFORD to sit at a blackjack table at one of the big hotels for hours on end where the minimum bet was $2. Such is life I guess isnt it.

Thank you Stardust. You will be missed.
