Disneyland closed today

Park shuts to the public as the media preview events for the 50th anniversary celebration.

Disneyland will be closed to the public today as 1,200 journalists and special guests get a sneak peek of attractions that are part of the 50th anniversary. The official celebration begins Thursday.

Disneyland has rarely been closed since it became a 365-day-a-year operation in 1986. It did not open on Sept. 11, 2001.

Disneyland's 50th birthday is July 17, but the company chose the date 05-05-05 to begin an 18-month celebration. Disney's theme parks around the world also are opening new attractions in Disneyland's honor.

Celebrities including Kelsey Grammer, Sheryl Crowe and Teri Hatcher are expected to walk down the gold carpet tonight for a VIP party.

Disney's California Adventure will be open today from 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
