Walt Disney Treasures newest wave (December 19)

First off, not sure why they aren't coming out until December 19, if they want to maximize holiday gift purchases, you would think they'd be out earlier.

Some of the details as to what is one the four new titles in the series are on the Disney website.

    Your Host Walt Disney -
Celebrate Walt Disney and his magical vision with this look back at several of the most memorable hours from his groundbreaking television shows. As its friendly, approachable host, Disney endeared himself to millions and became much more than an icon for family entertainment. He became Uncle Walt. Join Walt as he celebrates the rededication of Disneyland with a parade of celebrities and guest stars, the fourth anniversary of his weekly show featuring a surprise party arranged by the Mouseketeers, and a tenth anniversary program showcasing some of his talented Imagineers at work. And in a rare interview, Diane Disney Miller shares warm and personal memories of growing up with the man we all admired from afar.
The 10th anniversary show was already included on the Disneyland USA title from several years back. Was there no other show they could have included in its place?

The Complete Pluto - Volume Two -
Mickey's best pal Pluto continues to light up the screen as leading dog in more of his adventure-filled cartoons. Putting the spotlight on his comical antics from 1947 through 1951, this volume includes the inspired "Bone Bandit" of 1948 and the 1951 classic "Plutopia." The treats continue with three rarely seen shorts featuring Pluto's feline nemesis Figaro, and a revealing exploration of a classic Pluto short. Plus, contemporary Disney master animators discuss their favorite Pluto moments and the art and craft behind them. It's no wonder Mickey's faithful pup became top dog around the world. Featuring exclusive introductions by film historian Leonard Maltin, this is a timeless collection from generations past for generations to come.
    More Silly Symphonies -
From the beginning, Walt Disney's SILLY SYMPHONIES series was a mecca for innovation and unabashed creativity. This second volume of the revolutionary series boasts some of Disney's rarest cartoons, including over a dozen never before released on DVD or video. Among the many animation treasures celebrated here are the never-before-released HELL'S BELLS and the original unedited MOTHER GOOSE GOES HOLLWYOOD, plus the Academy Award®-winning THREE ORPHAN KITTENS (Best Cartoon, 1935). Enriching the collection even further are several optional commentaries by some of the world's foremost animation and film music experts, who also take part in a lively conversation about the series that let Walt Disney push the envelope of animation art to unimaginable flights of fantasy. Featuring exclusive introductions by film historian Leonard Maltin, this is a timeless collection from generations past for generations to come.
    The Hardy Boys -
THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB'S magical mix of entertainment was so captivating to television's first generation of children, watching it became a daily ritual. And so the first day of the show's second season, millions thrilled to the debut of a new adventure series, THE HARDY BOYS: THE MYSTERY OF THE APPLEGATE Treasure. All the cliff-hanging suspense unfolds right here, including the entire MICKEY MOUSE CLUB episode that introduced the series. Plus, you'll get clued in to the truth behind the novels' author Franklin W. Dixon, and you'll witness the reunion of Tim Considine (Frank Hardy) and Tommy Kirk (Joe Hardy) at the scene of the crime -- Stage 2 at the Disney Studio.
I know people are upset that they aren't including the whole Mickey Mouse Club episodes that these each ran during, but I'm just glad to see them releasing this at all.

I've already pre-ordered them, since I have all of them thus far. Thoughts?

Re: Walt Disney Treasures newest wave (December 19)

Here's the box art from each set:

The tenth anniversary show on Your Host, Walt Disney does appear to be the same one included in the Disneyland U.S.A. set. It's a Wonderful World of Color episode from 1965 that profiled Disney Imagineering with a sneak preview of POTC and the Haunted Mansion. I'm not sure why it's being repeated here, but Disney has included identical content on different Disney Treasures before. Der Fuehrer's Face is found on The Chronological Donald and On the Front Lines. Chicken Little (the original short cartoon) is on On the Front Lines and Disney Rarities.

I know royalty/residual issues with performers appearing on The Mickey Mouse Club and Wonderful World of Color/Disney have prevented Disney from releasing complete episodes on DVD (I know these issues hampered release of The Muppet Show too). Hopefully, as they're resolved, we'll see more live action Disney TV on DVD.

Personally, I'd love to see The Mouse Factory released on DVD. It was a half-hour syndicated show that ran in the early 70's. It basically repackaged material from Wonderful World of Disney, but it was a lot of fun with introductions by celebrity hosts (Phyllis Diller, Charles Nelson Reilly, Ken Berry, et.al.).

I love the Treasure sets althought I was a bit dissapointed when the stopped numbering and limiting the sets - kind of takes the collection and rarity out of it, but oh well.

From what I remember, Mary Poppins came out around the same time (in relation to Christmas) and sold just fine. Also, the treasures tend to come out late Dec and late May - some sell faster than others.

The title Your Host, Walt Disney intriges me, but not once I learn what is on it is something that I already own.

FYI - I have found these for sale at Wal*mart during the holiday season in years past of Treasure collections OF years past. So be sure to check there and other places before E*bay.

Just glad to see the new wave released. After some of the controversies with the picture quality, I was concerned Disney would not release them again. Hopefully they will have improved it this time.
Also I miss the numbered series also, and have to agree about the limited editions.

Re: Walt Disney Treasures newest wave (December 19)

The late release (12/19) of the WD Treasures is the tail-end of a pretty busy Disney DVD release schedule for the holidays:

    Cars - 11/7
    Robin Hood - 11/28
    POTC 2 - 12/5
Walt Disney Legacy Collection (True-Life Adventures) - 12/5
    Fox & Hound 2 - 12/12

Disney wants Cars and POTC to be the monster DVD releases during the holidays, so they're getting released earlier. WD Treasures will be purchased mostly by collectors and Disneyphiles, so releasing them closer to Christmas probably won't help or hinder overall sales. I'm curious to see how the Legacy Collection does. It's a niche release that could be completely overlooked by the masses clamoring for POTC, but will be very popular with collectors.

Re: Walt Disney Treasures newest wave (December 19)

The Disneyland episode may be repeated, and it is not the only one: "I Captured the King of the Leprechauns", the 1959 making-of episode also appeared on the Darby O'Gill and the Little People DVD.

Balancing this out is the fact that a formerly "lost" TV special is making its DVD debut. Indeed, it is the first time it has been seen in a while.

    From an earlier post:

the long-thought-to-be-lost special "Kodak Presents Disneyland '59" featuring such celebrities as Clint Eastwood and Dennis Hopper in addition to a robust slate of Disney stars and Art Linkletter.
This last one will be of most interest to theme park fans, as it is filmed largely in the park.

I had to go to ebay to find "Disneyland USA" and "Behind the Scenes At the Walt Disney Studio." You can bet I'll be buying "Your Host: Walt Disney" the day it comes out. Thanks for the info!

I hate how they edit the episodes. I want to see the episodes in their entirety as they were when they first aired

If we already have "Disneyland USA", then should we still purchase "Your host walt disney"?

As I was saying above, the biggest drawcard is going to be "the long-thought-to-be-lost special "Kodak Presents Disneyland '59" featuring such celebrities as Clint Eastwood and Dennis Hopper in addition to a robust slate of Disney stars and Art Linkletter." It is set inside the theme park, goes for about 90 minutes and will no doubt be a curiosity for theme park fans the world over.
