    Synergy at General Hospital

OK, so I was working at home Monday afternoon with General Hospital on awaiting Genie Francis's return to the show this week as Laura when I ran into something that almost made me want to hurl.

There was a scene involving dayplayers, pregnant wife and husband, arriving at the GH and hubby wants to get batteries for his ... TV ... so he can catch tonight's 'Monday Night Football game between the Giants and Cowboys on ESPN' ... that's a direct quote. The whole scene played out over 3-4 minutes, but was absurd and so forced that only an idiot would think this is natural.

This on the heels of two other INNOCENT (yeah, right) forced examples of synergy on GH that I've caught (and I don't watch it every day) in the past few months.

Once, a major character (Carly) bemoans not being able to 'watch the Oscars Sunday on ABC' with her dear friend Courtney because ... well, Court fell victim to a killer virus spread by a chimp and died (no, I am not making this up).

A few months later, Jax takes Carly's kids (who are cool to mommy's new beau) to WDW for the day on his private jet and they return with all kind of cool gifts, like Sorceror Mickey hats and Buzz Lighyear toys in REAL WDW shopping bags.

What I want to know is how much the person who forces these synergystic references into GH makes a year ... any guesses? I'm thinking mid six figures ... any thoughts?

Maybe tomorrow Luke will come back with Laura's cure to wake her from her four-year coma -- you guessed it -- a Golden Fastpass from the Year of a Million Dreams!

Mmmm...that's what we have to put up with when General Hospital is on ABC, who is owned by Disney. I've learned to not even bother with it since it's so silly IMO.

Oh yeah...Laura has not been in a coma the past four years. Catatonic state is more like it. But I know what ya' mean! Can't wait...2 more days!

It's really bad ... today they showed scenes for tomorrow and one of Alexis's daughters is holding an Ariel doll just in time for the DVD release.

    Synergy can be evil.

I watch GH everyday and when they work those Disney references in I am amused by them. A few days ago Alexis mentioned that Viola (Kristina and Molly's nanny) had taken the girls to WDW to explain their absence during her cancer treatment. I even remember Michael (Carly's red headed kid) wearing a Disney Store T-shirt of Chronicles of Narnia when the movie got released. These references are subtle and rare I wouldn't make a big deal over them.

I actually enjoy all of these little touches to the show. Being a Disney fan, I love it when they go and bring things back from there and being a football fan, I enjoyed the comments about the MNF game.

    Subtle? Rare?

You and I have vastly different definitions of those terms.

BTW, today there was more of the Ariel doll with Kristina and some babble about being able to talk to the character online.

Nah ... that's not in your face.

Funny... I notice how the "guys" where discribed as hanging out and watching ESPN on "Dancing With the Stars"...

They ain't gonna be saying Fox Sports Net... But it does make you wonder if someone would beat someone else with a stick if they did or if it ended up on some editing room floor...

Yeah and how many weeks and months go by that nothing is ever mentioned. Once and a while they throw something in and it is usually mentioned once in the whole episode. It is far from being crammed down your throat as you'd like people to believe. And I know very well what the defination of the words subtle and rare is.

If watching GH is going to be so painful and vomit enducing for you than get over it and change the channel. Honestly some people will just complain about anything Disney does.

I agree. I think the whole Ariel doll with Kristina, was yes...to promote the Little Mermaid, but at least it was a way to get her to have some dialogue. The little girl who plays her is adorable and I'm just happy to see her on there and actually talking (unlike other soap children, AKA Morgan, original Lulu, original Kristina, original Georgie).

I don't know, I still enjoy these types of things. It makes them a bit more human to me and it makes me even more interested that the characters are being written to enjoy the same things that I do.

Of course, this could be because I'm finding the actual story lines boring as all get out. I keep asking myself why I still watch but I keep thinking that if I stop, it will get really good and I'll miss it.

Why are you taking it so personally?

One of those folks who hate when Disney gets criticized?

And watching ABC Daytime, and a friend of mine happens to be employed on one of the shows so I do have a personal interest, can be painful although it hasn't made me puke ... yet.

FWIW, Thursday on AMC one of the young kids (Emma?) was dressed as Ariel and blubbering about the LM ... I'm sorry, but this is blatant hucksterism and commercialism at its most tacky.

Absolutely not, you obviously don't know me too well.

I won't be bothered to watch more than one soap.

Are you trying to get us to believe that you would do things differents if you were in charge? It would be foolish not to promote your products and/or services when the appropriate time comes.
Not trying to start a flame war with you....but you need to accept that not everyone has to agree with you all the time, and respect their opinions when they don't. No need to be so defensive all the time.
