Another "American Idiot"? Say it ain't so Billie Joe!

Man seeks credit for entire Green Day CD

MEDFORD, Ore., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- An Oregon man is pressing his claim that he wrote not one but all of the songs on Green Day's Grammy-winning "American Idiot" album.

Paul McPike, 32, Medford, filed a lawsuit in federal court last week alleging that he composed the lyrics and the music for "American Idiot" in 1992 -- more than 10 years before it became a best-seller and won the Grammy for best album in 2005.

A federal magistrate recommended dismissing the case, the Medford Mail Tribune reported, but left the door open for a re-filing of the case.
McPike is representing himself and told the newspaper he planned to resubmit the case after further research of copyright law.

McPike contends he sang all of the "American Idiot" tunes in 1992 for his classmates at a California alternative high school.

It sucks that Green Day has to deal with these types of people.

U2 wins lawsuit over band memorabilia

    Posted 11/15/2006 10:06 AM ET

An Irish court ruled in U2's favor over items taken
by a stylist formerly in their employ.

LONDON (AP) Irish rock band U2 emerged victorious Wednesday in a court battle with a former stylist it claimed had taken important memorabilia without permission nearly two decades ago.
Lola Cashman had told Dublin's High Court that U2 frontman Bono had given her several items as gifts during U2's Joshua Tree tour in 1987.

An iconic Stetson hat, a pair of metal earrings, a green sweat shirt and a pair of black trousers all worn by Bono were among the disputed items Cashman claimed she had been given.

But after a protracted legal dispute that saw Bono take the witness box, judge Michael Peart ruled that on the balance of probability, the items had not been given to Cashman as she had claimed.
The band's lawyer, Paul Sreenan, said U2 would not pursue costs against Cashman for the appeal or for an earlier circuit court action she lost last year.

Neither U2 nor Cashman were in court for the ruling.

A lower Irish District Court ruling last year rejected Cashman's defense and ordered her to return all the items to the band.

U2 filed the lawsuit after Cashman tried to sell the clothes and photos at a London auction house in 2002. She further angered the band with her 2004 book, Inside the Zoo With U2: My Life With the World's Biggest Rock Band.

During her 2005 testimony, Cashman claimed that Bono had handed over the Stetson and other items while dancing about in his underwear backstage following a concert in Phoenix.

He means that he has no lawyer, so he is representing himself in court.

I agree. That guy is just looking for money and perhaps 15 minutes of fame.

So typical. Something becomes popular and these weirdos come out of the woodwork saying it was their idea. They just want money. Greedy bastards.

Grocery Store Clerk Seeks Restitution From Green Day

Paul McPike, a ski resort employee now working as a grocery store clerk filed a copyright infringement complaint last week, alleging that Green Day stole the entirety of American Idiot from a collection of songs McPike wrote in high school in 1992. His evidence? A copy of Green Day’s album and his damning observation that Billie Joe does not sing the exact same words as the lyrics printed on the CD insert. Obviously Armstrong has problems remembering the words because he did not write them.

In a cruel move, a judge dismissed the case, but kept the possibility of justice alive by suggesting that McPike could further research his claim and resubmit it. This is exactly what McPike plans to do, spurred on in his quest by mystery evidence he has yet to disclose. What we do know is that McPike has been writing and recording songs for fun since he was a teenager and it’s likely one of his buddies, recognizing a singular talent in their friend, bootlegged one of McPike’s performances and passed the recording along to Green Day.

So why hasn’t McPike come forward during one of the approximately 764 days since American Idiot was released? Well he was in shock, obviously. “It was just disbelief every time I heard it on the radio,” McPike reportedly said. McPike wrote a bunch of letters to Warner Bros. and to the band but never heard back, so he was forced to take his claim to the law, where he is seeking an unspecified share (ie: s**tloads) of the proceeds from American Idiot and their new DVD Bullet in a Bible.
