How come Disney's live action movies from 80s & 90s have lousy DVD transfers?

How come Disney's live action movies from the 80s & 90s have lousy DVD transfers? Disney released a lot of great movies during that time period, however, their DVD transfers are not so good. Here's a few in my library that could have gotten a better treatment when put onto DVD:
    The Journey of Natty Gann
    The Rocketeer
Dick Tracy (ok, this one is under the Touchstone label)
    Cool Runnings
    White Fang
Then there's Shipwrecked which wasn't even put on to DVD yet. Another good movie was Iron Will, however I didn't see the DVD yet.
