Eragon - Was anyone else disappointed?

I never actually read the book, but everyone else in my family did, and we all eagerly anticipated the movie. We saw it Friday night, and I must say I was quite underwhelmed. I love this genre, but the film was not very good.

I blame the screenplay. The acting was adequate, but the lines were a bit too cliche, some of the coincidences too uncanny, some of the dialogue too melodramatic. The movie failed to explain way too many critical plot setups, and too often, I felt like the entire production was like an inside joke that those of us who didn't read the book were not privileged to be in on. On the other hand, I heard a lot of people outside the theater -- not just my family -- saying that the movie was nowhere near as good as the book.

I'm not sure if this makes any sense, but I walked out of the theater and thought, "now that was a great story, but poorly told."

Re: Eragon - Was anyone else disappointed?

My daughters are dying to see it, but my eight year isn't quite done with the book (not taking them til she's done, so it might be a few more days).

I'm underwhelmed by the ads and the marketing. I'm surprisingly not excited to see this movie. When I heard it was being made, we got all excited, but as the day drew nearer for the release, my ambivalence just grew about it.

Now I'm thinking it might be the one my sister-in-law takes the kids to on Friday, so that I don't have to go.

I'm hoping someone else will post a better review to change my mind!!

If you haven't read the book yet don't read it before seeing the movie. if you read the book you will have very high expectations and will expect an epic of the size of Lord of the Rings or Narnia. An epic this is not. A nice story but many liberties were taken with the plot to keep the movie short. You will enjoy the movie much more if you have not read the book. then after you see the movie go to the library or buy the book and engross yourself in it for days. I highly reccomend the book, and the 2nd book in the series, Eldest. Very well written.

I never read the book but I thought the movie was ok. The CGI was impressive. The location shots were beautiful. It would be an interesting book to read.

I added a poll for those who have seen the film to rate it. This was one of the films that I was really looking forward to seeing. Perhaps a few more reviews will help me decide if it is worth what little time I have available or if I should see something else.

For those who have seen Eragon, is it kid friendly? My 7 year old son really wants to see the movie.
Anything listed on the park maps as an attraction is fair game for inclusion in the Rally.
I cannot confirm nor deny the inclusion of any attraction in the Rally.

I thought it was pretty kid friendly. I would say a seven year old should enjoy it.

Easily the worst movie I've seen this year.

The reviews have been awful (14% on Rottentomatoes.com)! Eragon and Eldest are two of my son's favorite books, it's to bad they didn't do a better job with the movie.

Re: Eragon - Was anyone else disappointed?

Really have been wanting to see it, and finally did last night.

I believe the actor who played Eragon was the same actor who played the young Prince William of England in a recent made-for-tv film. If he wasn't the same he should have been...cause that's what I kept thinking though the whole thing.

There is some amazing scenery and filming..and some pretty awful editing. Very choppy, very WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT? (Best unintentional hysterical moment)

    Spoiler
When Eragon is discovering that there is a magic word for everything He first realizes it by the word "tree" then runs around and grabs a branch wanting to know what it is...looked sorta familar then someone yelled out...
"W..A...T..E...R It's a Helen Keller moment! " And OMG they were right, it was like watching the scene where Helen Keller discovers langauge.. the entire theater just roared with laughter.

Best part of the film, easily Jeremy Irons..(Hey common, it's SCAR) He did an amazing performance. I personally felt that another 20-30 min of footage, with properly added a min here and there, with better editing would have made a world of difference. Lots of plot holes..big enough to fly a dragon through. But will I see it again..Oh yeah..it will be part of my video collection. A good little film, but could have been a whole lot better.

    IMHO

As far as being kid friendly...this movie is PG so it should be fine. However if the movie had met its potential it should have been an R considering how much violence occurs in the book itself.

I haven't neccesarily seen it. But by the reviews and everything, I haven't heard great news. I read the book a long time ago, and it was quite good. But I'm not especially ready to see it. (Just like the mistake I made when I saw the Harry potter: and the goblet of fire, and saw it was a disapointment compared with the book.)
