Top 10 films of the year by Stephen King & you!

    2006: My Top 10 Movies

Stephen King's got his big-screen honor roll -- but notes when he's got the choice between going out to the cineplex or staying home at the TV, these days the small screen often wins

Jackson and Daniel Craig brought the star power to
two of the 10 pics on King's list of his 2006 favorites

here's my list of the best I've seen since last December. Not a critic's list, remember; I'm just another schlub in the popcorn line.
    10. The World's Fastest Indian Anthony Hopkins as a motorcycle racer. What else do you need to know? Oh, the movie's great — funny and moving.
    9. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada Frakkin' horrible title. Great movie. Tommy Lee Jones channels Cormac McCarthy...and it works.
    8. Waist Deep This is old-school urban action, honey, the way they don't hardly make 'em no more. Starring the immensely likable Tyrese Gibson.
    7. Snakes on a Plane You got your basic snakes on a plane, you got Samuel L. Jackson doing his thing, and a good-humored, high-tension script that recalls the first two Bruce Willis Die Hard pictures. So, hey — what's not to like?
    6. The Illusionist Two movies featuring magicians from the early 1900s came out this year. I saw both, liked both. What made The Illusionist special for me was Edward Norton dueling with Paul Giamatti, and an ending that compelled me back into the theater at once to see how I had been tricked.
    5. The Descent The best horror movie of the year, beyond doubt. Possibly because the main characters are all adults, for a change? The sense of doom-laden claustrophobia this movie generates is intense and remarkable.
    4. Casino Royale I came out of the theater thinking it was the best Bond since Goldfinger. A subsequent viewing of Goldfinger — for this column — has convinced me it's the best Bond ever.
    3. The Departed Ensemble ''star power'' movies hardly ever work, but when they do, they can be cool. The Departed is can't-take-your-eyes-off-it entertainment. Matt Damon continues to amaze me with his versatility.
    2. United 93 If this emotionally wrenching docudrama isn't nominated for Best Picture, the Academy should be ashamed of itself.
    1. Pan's Labyrinth I happened to see this in July and was completely seduced by its beauty and emotional ferocity. Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Mimic, Blade II) directed, and to call this his best work isn't enough. I think this extraordinary R-rated fairy tale for adults is the best fantasy film since The Wizard of Oz. And while it's much darker than Wizard, it still celebrates the human spirit. Your Uncle Stevie thinks you will see this movie.

I've posted threads about most of the films on my list already
but here's 10 of mine (in no particular order):

    Babel
    Volver
    Apocalypto
    The Prestige
    United 93
    Casino Royale
    The Queen
    Little Miss Sunshine
    Half-Nelson - Ryan Gosling's performance is amazing
    The Departed

    and honorable mentions to:

    Best animated film - 'CARS'

'Bug' - Ashley Judd gives a dazzling, strange brave performance

'The Dead Girl' - the ensemble cast is star-studded and makes this film hum

    What are your Top 10?

in my opinion, the departed was the greatest movie of the year. hands down. if the academy snubs scorsese out of another oscar, it will be highway robbery. i mean, how do you not win an oscar for gangs of new york, casino, goodfellas, raging bull, or taxi driver? you could even thrown in mean streets, the king of comedy, the color of money, and cape fear.

this man is responsible for some of the greatest films ever and he has never won an oscar, but at least the Three 6 Mafia has.

if martin doesn't walk away with best director for the departed, the oscars will officially mean nothing in my mind (not that it matters what i think).

Oh, if that list was by number, and his favorite really is Pan's Labyrinth, then I have to say bravo. That movie is amazing, and very deserving of awards up the wazoo. It really rates up there with Wizard as one of the best fantasy films ever produced.

I doubt anyone else has seen it, but if you have a chance, catch it when it hits theaters this month. It's a dark tale deep with imagination, maybe so dark and deep that it's not kid-friendly, but that shouldn't stop you from taking your kids if you're open-minded. It's intelligently gruesome, and I believe only drops one F-bomb. Either way, it's a fantasy story with a young girl as the main heroine, so it's really fine for everyone.

Edit: Here's my top ten, no particular order. (including foreign and independents)

    Pan's Labyrinth
    Volver
    The Departed
    The Illusionist
    Only Human
    Cache
    United 93
    Borat
    Mission: Impossible III
    A Scanner Darkly

Cache might not be 2005 though...

Re: Top 10 films of the year by Stephen King & you!

I'm like Stephen King, I see alot of my non-family type movies once they come out on DVD. Unfortunately, unlike Mr. King, I have to wait until they are released on DVD. So when it comes to Oscar time I usually haven't seen many of the films until after the awards.

That being said, my Top 10 (so far) for this year

    The DaVinci Code
    Thank you for Smoking
Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest
    Cars
    Superman Returns
    Stranger than Fiction
    Borat
    V for Vendetta

Actually, I think that's all I've seen this year that I could possibly put on a top 10 list. I just have to see more movies before I make my final list.

    Movies I want to see:

    Babel
    The Departed
    Little Miss Sunshine
    The Pursuit of Happyness
    Apocalypto
    Blood Diamond
    Casino Royale
    The Queen
    For Your Consideration
    Bobby
    The Prestige
    The Illusionist
