SAG Awards nominations announced - Variety 1/5/07

    Screen Actors Guild announces nominees
    Actors honor their own

    By Dave McNary
    January 5, 2007

    'Babel' was honored by SAG.
    Helen Mirren was nominated
for 'Elizabeth I' and 'The Queen.'

    Leonardo DiCaprio received two nominations
    from the Screen Actors Guild.

With no one film dominating the nominations, the Screen Actors Guild tapped "Babel," "Bobby," "The Departed," "Dreamgirls" and "Little Miss Sunshine" to contend for its feature ensemble award.

Paramount Vantage's "Babel," Paramount and DreamWorks' "Dreamgirls" and Fox Searchlight's "Little Miss Sunshine" took three noms each, while Warner Bros.' "Blood Diamond" and "The Departed," New Line's "Little Children" and Fox Searchlight's "Notes on a Scandal" garnered two apiece.

Nominations, announced Thursday morning by Sandra Oh and Elijah Wood at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, repped a strong performance by studio specialty divisions, which drew 14 of the 25 mentions for features. Fox Searchlight led the list with half a dozen.

The SAG noms, chosen by a panel of 2,100 guild members, excluded Clint Eastwood's companion films - Paramount's "Flags of Our Fathers" and Warner's "Letters From Iwo Jima" - along with Universal's "United 93," although those three pics are still considered strong possibilities in Oscar voting. The trio also were snubbed in Wednesday's Producers Guild nominations.

Leonardo DiCaprio drew a lead actor nom for "Blood Diamond" and a supporting actor mention for "The Departed" (he drew two lead actor noms for the perfs at the Golden Globes), adding an ensemble nom for "The Departed."

Helen Mirren received nominations for both of her perfs as British royalty, with a lead film actress mention for "The Queen" and lead actress in a TV movie or miniseries for "Elizabeth I" (she won an Emmy for the latter).

Besides DiCaprio, lead actor nominees in film are Ryan Gosling in ThinkFilm's "Half Nelson," Peter O'Toole in Miramax's "Venus," Will Smith in Sony's "The Pursuit of Happyness" and Forest Whitaker in Fox Searchlight's "The Last King of Scotland."

"It's great that the low monetary value of `Half Nelson' hasn't affected people's perceptions of its emotional value," Gosling said.
SAG will announce the winners, voted by the 120,000 guild members, on Jan. 28 in ceremonies at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. SAG's ensemble award has matched the best picture Oscar in six of the 12 years since its inception, including last year's wins for "Crash," which marked a major shift in momentum away from "Brokeback Mountain."
    And the nominees are...

    Leonardo DiCaprio - "Blood Diamond"

Disney-ABC Television Group series received eight nominations -- including recognitions for "Grey's Anatomy," "Boston Legal," "Desperate Housewives" and "Ugly Betty" -- for the 13th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which were announced this morning.

Touchstone Television, which produces three of the nominated series, currently has the #1 ("Grey's Anatomy"), #2 ("Desperate Housewives") and #3 ("Lost")-rated primetime shows for the season in Adults 18-49, the first studio ever to have the top three primetime programs in the history of the Nielsen People Meter. First-time Comedy Ensemble nominee "Ugly Betty" is the #1-rated new comedy of the season in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.

Two-time Screen Actors Guild nominee "Grey's Anatomy" received two nominations, including Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series - for Chandra Wilson, her first nomination for her portrayal of Dr. Miranda Bailey, the tough-as-nails doctor who both terrorizes and nurtures her interns.

This season's critically acclaimed newcomer, "Ugly Betty," received two nominations, including Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series as well as America Ferrera's first nomination for her role as the reluctant beauty Betty Suarez.

Previous Screen Actors Guild comedy ensemble winner "Desperate Housewives" received two nominations, including a repeat nomination for last year's winner Felicity Huffman, nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series category.

In addition to "Boston Legal's" Drama Series nomination, James Spader is recognized with his second straight Actor nomination for his role as Alan Shore, the high priced eccentric litigator at Crane Poole & Schmidt.

The 2007 Screen Actors Guild Awards will be presented Sunday, January 28, 2007 in Los Angeles.
