The international television market is on a roll, and U.S. TV programs are back in favor with audiences worldwide. This was the message sent to the world's top broadcasters Sunday at the kickoff of the annual Los Angeles Screenings.
This year's screenings, an informal international television market that attracts international buyers to see the latest program slates from the studios, is expected to be one of the strongest in years, buyers and international television studio heads said.
The weeklong market began with Buena Vista International Television's fifth annual international upfront Sunday amid predictions of a bumper year for international television in 2005. The presentation and party took place at the El Capitan Theatre and at the Highlands nightclub. Disney president, chief operating officer and CEO-elect Bob Iger and Anne Sweeney, co-chairman of Disney Media Networks, were expected to attend.
"We believe that 2005 will be a fantastic year for the world of international television," said Buena Vista International Television president Laurie Younger, according to an advance copy of her speech provided by BVITV. "Our indications are that the global TV advertising market will grow by a healthy 6% this year, and that similar or even higher growth is forecast in the two or three years after that."
As for BVITV, she said, "We look set to have our most successful ever year in the company's history, with revenue nudging the $1 billion mark."
