    'The Queen' & Bond get British film nods

    Daniel Craig's first foray as James Bond earned him
    a best actor nod for the British Academy Film Awards.

    LONDON (AP) — The Queen and Casino Royale led the nominations for the British Academy Film Awards announced Friday, with Helen Mirren among the nominees for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II and Daniel Craig cited for his performance as James Bond.

    The Queen received 10 nominations, including best film, outstanding British film of the year, best direction (Stephen Frears), best screenplay (Peter Morgan) and best supporting actor (Michael Sheen).

    Casino Royale bagged nine nominations, followed by Pan's Labyrinth with eight, Babel with seven, and The Departed,United 93 and Little Miss Sunshine with six each.

    Besides The Queen, nominees for best film are Babel,The Departed,The Last King of Scotland and Little Miss Sunshine.

    Mirren's rivals for best actress are Judi Dench for Notes on a Scandal, Penelope Cruz for Volver, Meryl Streep for The Devil Wears Prada and Kate Winslet for Little Children.

    Besides Craig, nominees for best actor are Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed ), Richard Griffiths (The History Boys ), Peter O'Toole (Venus ) and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland ).

    Nominations for Casino Royale also included outstanding British film of the year, special effects, music, cinematography and best adapted screenplay.

    The awards ceremony will take place Feb. 11.

    LONDON (AP) Daniel Craig was honored but Helen Mirren was denied Sunday at the 34th annual Evening Standard British Film Awards.

    Craig was named best actor for Casino Royale, his debut outing as James Bond. Craig, who has won both critical praise and box office favor as the first blond Bond, is also up for the best-actor prize at next week's British Academy Film Awards.

    Mirren, who is an Academy Awards favorite for her turn as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, lost the best actress prize to Judi Dench, awarded for her portrayal of a predatory schoolteacher in Notes on a Scandal.

    The best-film prize went to United 93, Paul Greengrass' harrowing dramatization of the final flight of one of the planes hijacked in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

    Peter Morgan won the screenplay award for two scripts The Queen and The Last King of Scotland.

    Sacha Baron Cohen, creator of the gauche Kazakh journalist Borat, won the Peter Sellers Award for comedy.

    Stephen Frears, director of The Queen, received a special award for "for making British film reverberate around the world." The veteran director's socially conscious films include My Beautiful Laundrette,Dangerous Liaisons and Dirty Pretty Things.

    The Evening Standard awards are sponsored by London's afternoon newspaper and selected by a jury of film critics.
