    J.J. Abrams' 'Star Trek 11'

    J.J. Abrams Talks 'Trek'

''I can't wait to do this,'' the ''Lost'' creator says of
producing the next film in the franchise

DEVELOPMENT PHASERS Abrams was mum on plot details, though published reports have said his Trek movie will focus on the younger days of Spock (played in the original TV series by Leonard Nimoy, left) and Kirk (William Shatner, center)

After his panel at the New York Times' 6th Annual Arts & Leisure Weekend, EW sat down with Mission: Impossible III helmer and Lost creator J.J. Abrams to get an inside look at his new enterprise: a Star Trek movie. While it isn't clear when we can expect to see the film, which will be the 11th in the series, he confirmed a draft of the script is done, and it will be trimmed sometime soon.

So what, exactly, will be the plot? Early reports (like this one in Variety) said that it will focus on the young, post-Starfleet Academy days of James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, but Abrams wouldn't specify. Still, he assured us it's a story that even non-Trekkers can enjoy. ''On the one hand, for people who love Star Trek, the fix that they will get will be really satisfying,'' he says. ''For people who've never seen it or know it vaguely, I think they will enjoy it equally, because the movie does not require you to know anything about Star Trek. I would actually prefer [that] people don't know the series, because I feel like they will come to it with an open mind.''

Alex Christian and Roberto Orci are executive-producing and writing the sci-fi flick, and Abrams is co-producing with Lost pals Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk. There's no word on a director or casting yet, but Abrams is anxious to move forward. ''I can't wait to do this,'' he says. ''It is an absolute thrill to work on this project. We really are still like, 'How the hell are we able to do this?'''

I'm mildly, but cautiously, optimistic, depending on who they cast for the lead roles. I think I would prefer unknowns. I don't want to see Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as Kirk and Spock, for example.

Matt Damon is in consideration for the part of Kirk, for those that don't know. I believe he's stated he would like the part. Nothing is confirmed, tho.

Abrams takes helm of 'Star Trek'

The Starship Enterprise finally has a new captain.

After months of speculation, J.J. Abrams has signed on to direct the next installment of the "Star Trek" feature franchise, sources said late Friday. "Star Trek XI" revolves around a young James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, chronicling their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first space mission.

Abrams, the prolific co-creator/executive producer of "Lost" and director of "Mission: Impossible -- 3" has been developing the project through his Paramount-based Bad Robot shingle as a producer and writer. But Abrams never committed to directing the project until Friday evening, when the deal was finalized, sources say. Abrams reps at WMA declined comment on the matter.

    I can't stand it.

The part that scares me the most is where they comment that even "Non-Trekkers" will like it. Who the cares if they like it?? Whatever happened to pleasing the actual fans?

Enterprise was canceled because they tried too hard to appeal to a broader audience AND all the weird stuff that comes from being a prequel.

    Can't they learn??

It will have to be pretty special to get me excited - I lost the will to Trek halfway through Voyager...

I would have enjoyed that, especially considering how the series ended, with no Alpha Quadrant return followup. I felt so cheated with that last show.

I got a little further than you, at least making it through the first few episodes of Enterprise.

I miss my main characters. Give me the original series, TNG, DS9, and even Voyager. I miss my old friends.

    I get that.

My point was that for once, I'd like them to think of something other than what they can get from it. Don't the conventions and the recent auction (plus all the fans who are generally more reserved and don't attend that type of thing..) prove that there are enough of us nutters to pay them well?

I think it'd be awesome if they used the Voyager crew! I only caught bits and pieces when it was new (I focused more on TNG and could never get into Voyager when it started), but have been watching it religiously now that it's on Spike. I reallllllly love Janeway, no matter what the general consensus is.

But yeah, I think it'd really be terrific if they used Voyager for the movies. And maybe go another 100+ years into the future with another crew for television?
