One of my favorites was nominated, but I haven't seen the films (yet). My brother has worked with Alan Robert Murray for years now. They came close to winning an Oscar in 2000 with Space Cowboys, but they lost out to U-571.
My brother said that it is a huge deal to have one person nominated for two films in the same category. The nominations come from other sound editors who view the clips of the films up for contention. Most years, there are only two to three films nominated in this category. To see five in this category is great.
He also said that their work had to have been impeccable. Plus, getting nominated for two films that they all really believed in is a huge bonus. When he was working on Letters From Iwo Jima, Jason said that no other film he worked on over the course of being in the business for 18 years had touched him so deeply.
