Animated flick inappropriate for most kids
"Madagascar," the new animated offering from Dreamworks Studios, is funny and bright, but it's unclear who it's made for.
It tells the tale of four denizens of New York's Central Park Zoo — Monty the exuberant zebra (Chris Rock), Alex the pampered lion (Ben Stiller), Gloria the home-girl hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman the hypochondriac giraffe (David Schwimmer). All four friends, by a combination of mishap and design, end up stranded back in the wild on the island of Madagascar — with some happier about it than others.
Many of the gags in this film are smart and laugh-out-loud funny, including a host of pop-culture references lampooning everything from "Planet of the Apes" to cheap Canadian pharmaceuticals. They are surprisingly clever and avoid the staleness that dragged down "Shrek 2."
