Disney gets 'American Pie' chef onboard - Variety 1/31/07

Rudin taps 'Pie' guy for film pact

Duo to make films under Disney banner

    January 31, 2007

Producer Scott Rudin has made a first-look deal with Craig Perry, who produced films including the "American Pie" and "Final Destination" series for Rudin's company.

Alliance gives Rudin the opportunity to generate mainstream comedies and family films to be made under the Disney banner. If Rudin sparks to a project Perry brings him, he will set it up through his Disney deal.

While Rudin has produced comedies including "Failure to Launch" and "School of Rock," his tastes run to highbrow fare with adult appeal. Most recently, that has included "The Queen," which he exec produced; "Notes on a Scandal," which he produced; and the Wes Anderson-directed "The Darjeeling Limited," which Rudin is producing. As a result, Rudin has so far set most of his projects at Miramax since leaving Paramount.

Perry's portfolio is more overtly commercial fare, like "Hawaiian Dick," a comedy he's prepping at New Line with director Frank Coraci. Perry produced the "American Pie" and "Final Destination" films while partnered in a management/production company with Warren Zide. He most recently has partnered with Sheila Hanahan in Practical Pictures; that alliance remains intact.

Move gives a haven to Perry at a time when studio overhead deals are harder to secure for producers. Perry worked as a development exec for Rudin during the 1990s on films including "Ransom," "Clueless" and "The Truman Show."
