Re: Disney not amused by students' 'Sister Act' - www.ireland.com/newspaper

The organization involved in the production is non-profit and didn't deliberately set out to financially screw over Disney. The least Disney could have done is smooth ruffled feathers by speaking up and explaining their position.

I was involved with productions put on by my high school drama group and my Girl Scout group. The Girl Scout production was to raise money the providing solar ovens for 'third world' countries. (I've been at this stuff since the 60s) In each case we contacted the copyright holder and received permission to use the work.
Being non-profit or not trying to "screw over" the legal owner is no excuse for not following well known legal procedures.
I am sorry for the performers but they were ill served by those in charge of this project.

Re: Disney not amused by students' 'Sister Act' - www.ireland.com/newspaper

A neighbouring school in my town did a production of Sister Act simulatenouslty while my school produced the Wizard of Oz. Our performing arts departments co-operated, and I believe the other school had no trouble finding a perfectly legal license from Disney for the show.

Disney were fully in their right to cancel the show, it didn't have the rights.
I do feel sorry for the cast and crew though.

I'd say about 90% of all Community Theaters are Non-Profit, imagine if they didn't pay royalties on their shows.
And if you don't pay and do the show anyways and they catch you its at least a $10,000 fine and that royalty company will never give you the rights to any other shows, ever. Thats just for the standard Royalty companies such as MTI, Samuel French, Tams-WitmarK, etc, god knows what Disney would do to you
