Is a Phantom Sequel in the Works?

The on-again, off-again sequel to Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera seems to be in the on-again mode.

In his Feb. 16 blog, the award-winning composer writes, "I can confirm what I told the studio audience whilst on the set of 'You're The One That I Want' last week in the U.S., that I am considering writing a sequel to Phantom of the Opera based on an idea presented to me over a decade ago. I will be returning to the U.K. shortly and hopefully have a blog for you, but let's just say, I am full of ideas!"

Lloyd Webber had previously written "The Heart Is Slow to Learn," a song for a Phantom sequel. That song was unveiled to the public at the televised London concert celebrating Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday. Kiri Te Kanawa performed the ballad. The composer later dropped the idea of the sequel and chose to collaborate on the musical The Beautiful Game.

Terrible idea in my opinion. The only reason for doing a sequel to Phantom is because his ego needs another hit. Sure, he's rich, he's respected the world over, he can do just about anything he wants, BUT he hasn'y had a major new success in forever.

I just can't see a Phantom sequel working.

If there was an award for worst ideas for sequals, this would be a contender for first place. Don't get me wrong, I really liked the movie and the music is amazing but a sequel would simply not work. The way the movie ended, there was closure. Christine had died and the rest of the cast were old. What would the sequal be? The years following the fire at the opera? Totally unecessary.

On the other hand, depending on what he's using as his inspiration... has anyone read the novel, Phantom? It was a cracking good "prequel" to the original Gaston Leroux story, and to some extent, I could see it working. I'm a little worried, but I generally like ALW's stuff, so we'll see. I mean, who else can take a subject like trains or cats and make a successful show out of it? He's only had one real flop, which was Jeeves, and the other shows have done reasonably well. Sure they aren't all Phantom or Jesus Christ Superstar, but I really enjoy what he's done so far, so I'll withhold judgment till I see/hear it.

Can't be any worse than Cinderella XIII: The Revenge of GusGus, right?

Personally, I found it funnier that he a)blogs, and b)also does a video blog on his website.

Ugh! Quit while ahead is what I say. Phantom is one of my top 3 theatre productions ever...I'd hate to see a sequel. Shudder.

That is one of the worst ideas I have heard. No sequal can or will ever do the show justice, I really hope it's off-again soon.

I've read the Gaston Leroux novel -- the musical doesn't compare to the original work. There was a lot they could have done with the musical given what they had to work with from the novel. Love the book, love the musical, but when I read about the possibility of Phantom 2, I cringed!! Is nothing sacred?
