I'm not sure he deserves number one American. He wasn't a saint, but saints don't exist. He definitely deserves a place in top twenty or even top ten, but there are more who deserve number one. I'll vote though.

Quite frankly, there are many on this list that I do not understand why they are there.

    Oprah? Yikes.

Henry Ford, Bill Gates, Walt Disney....does being a good business man or entrepreneur or innovater make you a great American?

Reagan, MLK, GWashington, Roosevelt.....I can see those qualifying.

    >>Henry Ford, Bill Gates, Walt Disney....does being a good business man or entrepreneur or innovater make you a great American?<<

Have you never watched Walt Disney's films? His dedication to patriotism, democracy, his advocation of individual and collective and industrial contribution to society, his love of optimistic futurism, his rembrance of the great individuals of history, his dedication to empowering the imagination of our youth... was without peer in its influence on generations of American children. Like his idol, Abraham Lincoln, Walt was was a truly great American, a regular man of the people, and a living example of the American dream - - from rags to riches - - from the farm to Tomorrowland. Walt IS middle America.
