Same here. I don't watch Family Guy at all. Just makes me lose brain cells even thinking about that show.

I honestly am not even sure which show Family Guy is. If it's animated, I pretty much don't watch, no matter how funny it is.

I'm all for Carol Burnett. She has more funny in her pinkie finger than almost anyone out there.

    Go Carol!

IMO it makes The Simpsons look like, I don't know... Shakespeare.

If you go to smokinggun.com and click on 'featured document' you will find Burnett's face on to top of the page. Click on it - and the piece she's suing over is there.

They actually use Carol Burnett's name - there is no parody here, there is no 'based on' thing here - it's HER.

Re: Carol Burnett sues FOX over "Family Guy" Episode

That's interesting that you say that, because in actuality, there is more historically accurate information, classic art, poetry, film, musical, and animation references in Family Guy than in the Simpsons.

It literally trips me out that what I cover in class will appear on Family Guy in some 5 second reference.

I've always felt that Family Guy appeals to three markets = the immature, the pop culture trivia nut, and the well versed. The people who "don't get it" usually dismiss it as immature nonsense, or don't get the references to classic art, movies, music, etc.

    Anyway, Family Guy FTW!

She should get over it. Burnett hasn't been on TV for years. A parody on Family Guy is a sign of respect. Thanks for your contributions throughout the years. Tonight we will honor you. Today's generation probably doesn't know who she is. I can see Burnett swimming through her millions, *sigh* Fox could donate a week or month's dvd sales to one of her favorite charities. good grief!

Is anyone here a copyright lawyer? I'd be curious to hear what they have to say. Its doesn't seem to me that you have to ask permission to parody someone. If that is the case how could shows on TV get away with the parodies they do. I'm certain South Park did not get permission to parody Scientology or Paris Hilton. The case of Hustler Magazine vs Jerry Falwell would also seem to support Family Guy's case. However, we will see.

correct, a parody needs no permission... its just courteously to ask and get permission, otherwise go ahead. look at half of the stuff on the internet.. parody with no permission.

now i dont know, is this still parody or is it likely "bad tribute"

On a personal note, Family Guy is a funny enough show. Though, my contention is that any one episode of the former Carol Burnett Show has more entertainment value that the sum total of FG. FUFG!
In the way Family Guy used it, that character is free for the rip off. Parodies are protected free speech, not subject to copyright laws. Carol is going to lose.

Well, from what I heard on the news yesterday, The Family Guy Folks asked Burnett if they could use 'her' and she replied with a firm 'NO' - and they did it anyway.

She probably didn't like being linked up to a Porn Shop, quite frankly, and I can't say that I blame her.

I do think she will win........I just have this feeling.
