Man, that was a good time to be a kid. Entertainment that was not only fun, but intelligent. These were shows that didn't assume kids were idiots. I mean, Animaniacs did a parody of H.M.S. Pinafore in one of their first episodes, and later in the series did freaking Gunga Din. Shows with continuity and narratives that could get pretty sophisticated (I remember as a kid being pretty impressed with a particular plot device in the pilot of Darkwing Duck), that weren't afraid to throw in references that kids simply wouldn't get. I miss shows like that. There's nothing being produced today for children that even comes close.

^Completly agree, in fact I have been revisiting all those great cartoons via Netflix recently and I am amazed with the level of jokes most of them have. The HMS Penafore Animaniacs is completly halarious for me because I once was in a production, and the final piece "Very Model of a Cartoon Individual" not only paradoys a song in the play but also sums up in about a minute and a half the entire WB philosophy in how to make cartoon humor (Im quite adept at funny gags, comedic theory I have read, from wicked puns and stupid jokes to anvils that drop on your head) while throwing in physical humor for the kiddies. Talk about a joke on multiple levels, I really dont understand why they dont rerun those shows on TV anymore.
