Universal' Peter Pan music and Disney?

I find it really getting strange now that just about every commercial for a Disney Theme Park, or Year of a Million Dreams Commercial, or Pirates and now being used in Paris Disneyland's 50th anniversary Castle show is music from a Universal movie. I can't help but wonder if Disney paid Universal for this one piece of music from the Live Action Peter Pan movie they made in 2004 ( music track is named "Flying" and is the best sounding of all the music from that wonderful film). But still it is getting very odd that Disney is using music from another studio's version of Peter Pan. Did they pay through the nose, or was some kind of "arraignment" made between Disney and Universal?

I was wondering that too - it's some of my favorite music.

I read somewhere here on this board in the past that Disney had indeed purchased this song.

Yah, and this isn't Disney's first relationship with James Newton Howard either, as he has scored Dinosaur, Atlantis, and Treasure Planet as well. Good stuff.

My only guess, and it is a bit of a stretch, is based on the fact that the music is scored by James Newton Howard. Howard has worked on many Disney films, from Treasure Planet to The Sixth Sense. So, in that regard the composer of the music has some ties to Disney but I've got nothing else.

It's not uncommon. When I first heard this music way before Disney started using it I thought to myself "This is great, I bet Disney would have loved it"... I also thought the same for "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe"...

Movie trailers exchange music rights all the time. So I'm not surprised Disney got the rights to use "Flying".

Movie studios utilize simple music licensing agreements all the time, as does television, advertising, etc.

And full-on partnerships too. In fact, Universal Studios' "Universal Music Publishing Group" is Disney's official "sub-publisher" of all Disney music titles...in Asia.

Also - - Disney was originally co-financing that film with Universal (notice all the Disney version nods in it), but WDC fell out of the deal becuase The Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children (to whom Barrie bequeathed his rights and Parliament extended copyright protection) wanted them to pay royalties on BOTH versions of Pan instead of just one.
