'Smith' takes out rivals

20th Century Fox's release of Regency Enterprise's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" had quite the impact at theaters this weekend as audiences put the hit on the Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie starrer with a stunning $51.1 million in estimated receipts -- far more than what was expected heading into the frame.
The sterling debut of the Doug Liman-helmed "Smith" was easily enough for the top spot and proved a personal best for Pitt and Jolie as well as the director. The PG-13 action-adventure comedy, about a couple of trained assassins who are married to each other, topped Pitt's previous high of $46.9 million from Warner Bros. Pictures' "Troy," and bested Jolie's $47.7 million debut of Paramount's "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider."
As a result of the outstanding boxoffice generated by "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" and now "Mrs. & Mrs. Smith," Fox has vaulted to the top spot in the North American market-share race with more than $700 million in its coffers for the year-to-date.
