FYI - The above is incorrect according to the article in the OP:A new version of Alice in Wonderland is on it's way, but not from Disney. Joe Roth, former head of Walt Disney Pictures is moving ahead with 20th Century Fox and Revolution Studios. Will this be another possible Disney hit that got away like the Harry Potter franchise? Stay tuned.
Read more on this story at:"...an 'Alice in Wonderland' live-action/CG film by Linda Woolverton, a screenwriter on 'The Lion King', for Walt Disney Pictures."

I remember hearing a while back (around when Charlottes Web came out) that Dakota Fanning was playing Alice in an upcoming movie...in fact because of that I was under the impression that she was already filming it, but IMDB tells me otherwise.
Ok I guess news of Dakota as Alice stopped around 2005.
Disney almost used Mary Pickford in a live action version of Alice in Wonderland....let's see if this pans out
