A live-action 'Alice in Wonderland' is on the way

Joe Roth, the former head of Walt Disney Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox and Revolution Studios, announces his next moves as an independent producer. His slate will include two films with his longtime friend Julia Roberts and an 'Alice in Wonderland' live-action/CG film by Linda Woolverton, a screenwriter on 'The Lion King', for Walt Disney Pictures.

first thing I thought of when I read this was the 1985 tv movie. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088693/

I never saw the 1999 version.

I didn't like the 1999 version too much. With Disney doing it I have higher hopes for it...as long as they resist the urge to have Johnny Depp play the mad hatter...enough is enough.

Streep as the queen! Roberts as Alice! Sounds good.

Disney won't be doing it. It is Tim Roth's independent production. It's just a coincidence that both Roth and Woolverton previously worked for the Mouse.

While Tim Roth is a wonderful actor, sadly he has nothing to do with this.

Producer Joe Roth is indeed working to produce an 'Alice' film for Walt Disney Pictures according to the Variety article. See below:
The eclectic slate ranges from a fact-based 9/11 project in development at Sony to a live-action version of "Alice in Wonderland" for Disney.

Re: A live-action 'Alice in Wonderland' is on the way

    Big year for Alice films....

We also have Alice starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (though, I'm not sure why...), based on American McGee's Alice and Phantasmagoria, starring Marylin Manson as Lewis Carrol, based on his life.

So, two truer to book live action Alice films to even things out a bit with the surreal we're getting elsewhere.

BTW: if you want to see an excellent Alice film, see Alice Through the Looking Glass, starring Kate Beckinsale as Alice. Somewhat loosely based in that this is told through an older sister telling this story to her younger sister (therefore, making it odd that a girl so young would have such large tracts of land). However, this is the most innovative, accurate, and complete version of Through the Looking Glass that I have ever seen -- it includes the deleted Wasp in a Wig segment.

Highlight of the movie, I think, is Ian Holm (who is no stranger to Alice -- he was Lewis Carroll in Dreamchild -- he also seems to be currently making a film for release this year called This Side of the Looking Glass -- is this another Alice project for him?) as the White Knight and his performance of the Aged Aged Man as a Buster Keaton silent film.

The two-part 1985 movie is probably one of the greatest productions ever. Mostly true to the books, a great cast.

The 1999 Hallmark version had its highs -- Martin Short as Hatter in particular. However, I hated how it tried to force a goal and moral into the stories. That just goes completely against the whole purposes of the books!

Almost forgot another upcoming Alice film.... there's a Looking Glass Wars movie currently in the works, too. If only Rev. Dodgson had got these kinds of residuals when he was living!

And then in Alice-inspired movies, there was recently The Last Mimzy, based on the Sci-Fi classic short story, "All Mimsy Were the Borogoves." I've yet to see that movie, but I've heard good things about it....

    Julia Roberts as Alice?? ...

Not the first face I would see in that spot, although I don't think I'm reading it right. Is she doing two movies with him AND he is doing the Alice movie or Julia will be Alice in the movie?

    No 'Alice' for Julia.
And Roberts is attached to "Eye Contact," a thriller being penned by "Penelope" scribe Leslie Caveny, and "Happiness Sold Separately," a book adaptation Scott Coffey will direct for Fox Searchlight.

For you trivia buffs: the latter of the two films will reunite her with her 'Satisfaction' co-star Scott Coffey though.

I didn't see actual mention of Julia Roberts as Alice or Meryl Streep as one of the queens... it did say they were attached to other projects, though. Is it a passage I missed?

(Meryl Streep was Alice in the 1981 made-for-tv movie, Alice at the Palace.)

Oh thank goodness, thanks for clearing that up!

You know who would make a great Alice? Dakota Fanning, I think she could encompass that character really well.
