Spider-Man 3 beats Pirates 2's first day record

Spider-man 3 earned a record $59 million on it's first day at the box office. The former record holder is Pirates of the Carabiean: Dead Mans Chest with 55.8 million. May has been the most hyped month of Box Office bohemiths, with the release Shrek the Third and Pirates: At World End by the end of the month. The question everyone will be asking is: how long will this record last?

The mistake here is, they opened Spidey up at the beginning of May giving it plenty of room and time for others to knock him off his web.

According to this story http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=2307&p=.htm. Spider-Man 3 opened in 119 more theaters than Pirates 2 for a total of 4,252 theaters vs 4,133 for POTC. Also, it says Spider-Man was on over 10,000 screens vs POTCs 8,500. Break it down per screen and Spidey did $5900 vs POTC $6500+

Is there a reason everyone is so anti-Spiderman? Is it just that it's in competition with a Disney franchise so that automatically makes it terrible? If that's the case, then that is really sad. I haven't seen the third one yet but I'd take that series over Pirates any day.

Eh, it was ok. I can't put my finger on why it wasn't great, but it just wasn't. I really enjoyed the first and second, so count me a little dissapointed.
Don't get me wrong, the action sequences were great, there were some great new characters. Maybe it was too long? Too much stuff going on? I don't know.
Pirates will. I am sure, be a more satisfying movie.

My boyfriend and I saw S3 last night. He kind of said the same thing. He is a lifelong Spidey fan, so I can see why he is so picky about it. OTOH, I thought it was great.

For real. Couldn't get through the first POTC without falling asleep, and the second hardly kept my attention either. I'm planning on seeing Spider-man 3 again, and if I have the time i'll go see POTC 3. It's a DVD rental until then.
