Disney explains reaction to Hamas use of Mickey Mouse image

Disney explains reaction to Hamas use of Mickey Mouse image

    By Suhaib Salem, Reuters
Palestinian children watch a Mickey Mouse look-alike, who urges children to support armed resistance against Israel, on Al-Aqsa TV in Gaza on May 13. Hamas' television station defied the Hamas-led Palestinian government on Friday by airing another weekly episode of the show.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Walt Disney Co. didn't speak out when Hamas militants used a Mickey Mouse look-alike to preach Islamic domination because the company felt it would be ineffective, Disney's chief executive said Monday.

Disney CEO Robert Iger said he and other executives considered ways to react to the recent Hamas show for children that featured someone dressed in what appeared to be a Mickey Mouse costume, railing against Israel and the United States in a high-pitched cartoonish voice.

"We didn't mobilize our forces and seek to either have the clip taken down or to make any broad public statement about it," Iger told a gathering of the Society of Business Editors and Writers at the Disneyland Hotel.

"We were appalled by the use of our character to disseminate that kind of message," he said "I think anytime any group seeks to exploit children in that manner, it's despicable."

Still, Iger said it didn't seem to make any sense for Disney to make any loud public statement at the time.

OK..."it didn't make any sense" to make a public statement against a look alike of their primary icon preaching hate...but put a mickey image in your business here in the US and the disney legal crew will decend on you en masse.

    Whatever.

The difference is, threaten an American business with a lawsuit, they'll most likely back down.

Threaten Hamas, not quite as effective.

I didn't say they had to threaten anyone...

My point, perhaps I didn't make it clear enough, is that often when their property (characters) are used with out permission they get all fired up. Whether it is via C/D letters or law suits or public statements against it. but in THIS case for some reason it made no sense to say anything. It's true, how do you threaten or sue what is basically a terrorist organisation? But at LEAST publically denounce the situation. No threats needed.

I think Disney's mentality was to take the high road and say nothing (an unusual move for them, to be sure). A noisy denouncement would've only drawn more attention to an ugly situation.

I can understand their reasoning, but I agree a brief, timely statement would've been appropriate.

I think what Disney did was exactly what they should have done.

    Applause.

Disney could've only done one thing: exactly what everybody else and Diane Disney-Miller did, which is to say how awful it is. Why should they rehash what was already said a million times and just bring even more publicity to this show?

Because in some groups...Hamas being one..."Silence is acceptance."

There are plenty of people who have the attitude of "if Disney thought it was wrong they would say something about it since that's what they do in other cases of their characters/images being used."
