05.24 thru 05.28.07 -- Star Wars Celebration IV! Los Angeles, CA

On Friday, May 25, 2007, the city of Los Angeles will declare this day to be STAR WARS DAY. The original film made its glorious debut on May 25, 1977... a mere 30 years ago. I certainly wasn't alive yet but born a year later and by the time I was able to become "attached" to anything, it was either Disney or it was Star Wars.

Though since I was born a year after the original film was released, I didn't get caught up with Star Wars toys. I just missed it. I got caught up into G.I.Joe and the figures with super articulation. But I still loved the movies and borrowed them all the time from the library.

The love for Star Wars only grew as I got older when the films were released on home video with new THX sound, and then as special editions in the theater, and then the anticipation for the prequels. I try to forget about the latter, but I still love "Star Wars" just the same.

    STAR WARS - A CELEBRATION

Though this convention is titled CELEBRATION IV, it's actually the 5th official Star Wars convention. The very first was held in Los Angeles back in 1987 at the Stouffer Concourse Hotel near LAX. Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, and Peter Mayhew was among the guests, including George Lucas himself.

CELEBRATION I was the start of a new tradition in Denver, CO in 1999, prior to the release of Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Jake Lloyd (young Anakin) and his onscreen mother played by Pernilla August were the special guests of that event.

CELEBRATION II was held prior to the release of Episode II: Attack of the Clones in Indianapolis in early May 2002, where the new fighting Yoda was the talk of the town.

CELEBRATION III returned once again to Indianapolis in April 2005 and another special appearance by George Lucas.

    The pins representing Celebration I-III.

CELEBRATION IV is back in Los Angeles for the 30th anniversary, and sad to say that George Lucas will not be stopping by. I have learned that he is in Europe working with Spielberg on shooting Indiana Jones IV already.

05.2407 -- THURSDAY: FAN CLUB PREVIEW DAY

The wait at the Convention Center was IN-SANE. And Thursday is only the Fan Club day too! Which means anyone who wasn't a member of the Star Wars fan club could not enter.

The floor to the convention opened at Noon, and if you don't have any identification, it may be difficult to get through these guys...

Speaking of identification, you couldn't get into the floor without a badge, and these badges are quite cute.

Darth Vader is the star of the 4 Day Pass:

Child 4day badge has the super cool Wicket the Ewok!

    Emperor Palpatine represents Media:

If you're working the event, you get the Stormtrooper:

VIP or Talent get the Yoda badge:

If you work at a booth, you get one of Admiral Ackbar. Haha, the legs couldn't have been funnier in this phoo:

But it's also good to Volunteer!

And once you get your badge sorted out, it's time to explore!

A Death Star looms over the lobby.

Know where you need to go?

    Then it's time to enter!

A LOT MORE TO COME, BUT THIS EWOK NEEDS SLEEP!

The first screening was held at the Coronet Theatre on Geary Blvd in San Francisco, reportedly Lucas' favorite movie house. (Mine, too!)

Sadly, the Coronet closed it's doors two years ago, purchased by the Goldman Institute on Aging, eventually to be demolished for a senior residence and medical center complex. It's front entrance is shabby and walled up with plywood; the building has seen better days, definitely.

I routinely drive past the Coronet when going to my neurologist, just a few blocks down the street. It's sad to see it boarded up and realize that one of the coolest Bay Area movie theatres is no longer in operation.

Sorry to wait so long for the rest of the report. I spent another entire day at the convention so here is Thursday's trip continued!

Gentle Giant Studios, maker of star wars busts and statues had a massive Jabba the Hutt on display...

And I stopped by throughout the day...

    ^Yup, it's huge!

Here's a display of the Vader costume and how it might look if it were done in the ways of the Samurai...

If you want to play Star Wars Black Jack or poker but never knew how, now you can..

Humina humina... Natalie Portman is most certainly the queen here!

    chewbacca art on sale...

    Chewbacca lego... NOT on sale.

    Chewbacca's head... for sale.

    The Ewok backpack in action!

Hasbro's booth had 30 years of toys on display...

And a life sized Power Droid

Some upcoming toys I'll eagerly sink my wallet into...

Hasbro had an exclusive for this convention, the Luke Starkiller figure based on concept art by Ralph McQuarrie.

SIDESHOW COLLECTIBLES also had quite a bit on display. Here's their life sized Darth Maul bust!

Here's a sneak at their exclusive at San Diego Comic-Con, pre-orders accepted now!

Ben here is up for pre-order starting June 6th...

Pezz Lightyear, do you see this??

A random vendor made a series of cool Rockets... I think they look rad!

    More to come!

Great update Coheteboy. After seeing that Lifesize Jabba picture I have 2 comments. 1. Man that Jabba is amazing. 2. How many gals are dressed as Slave Leia?

Hasbro has a lot of those Luke figures? What is the line like to buy stuff at the Hasbro booth?

oh yeah, the retro Star Wars gaming? Excellent!

I could spend so much money there so easily. I love the Lego magnets and the upcoming R2-KT figure is cool. Great cause, great toy. Usually I'd be against a pink R2 unit, but I think I am going to have to get one of those when they are released later this year. The Hasbro figures are getting better and better.

Re: 05.24 thru 05.28.07 -- Star Wars Celebration IV! Los Angeles, CA

Mellonballer, it was a PAIN to buy anything from the Hasbro booth. The wait was constantly an hour long. But I was lucky and did it first thing Thursday morning and only had to wait maybe 15 minutes and got everything I needed.

    Onwards to the Celebration Store!

What makes this Star Wars convention interesting is that they have a separate hall focused ONLY on exclusive Star Wars Celebration 4 merchandise. And here's the key... it's open 24 HOURS A DAY until the show closes down on monday. How insane is that? But what that means is that after the rush of opening day, getting your exclusives would be a breeze.

Here's an exclusive Ralph McQuarrie print that was selling for $50 at the store, limited to only 200 pieces. It sold out completely after a few hours of the day. It's a 5 day convention and the exclusive was GONE before the first day was over. I'm glad I got one!

The store was HUGE in space but without too much merchandise within. But it was super convenient. Probably the smoothest shopping experience one can expect at a convention.

Here's my stash of exclusive figures and some other items.

    I spent way too much.

Food. I was hungry. And my friend Ryan bought a $14 burger meal at the convention and it looked like this:

the meat doesn't even fill up the bun!

No way, sir! I'm not eating that! I walked a few blocks down to one of my favorite joints:

    THE PANTRY!

It's a cute place that NEVER closes... but cash only.

The menu is varied but filled with the variety that one can expect from a place like this: plenty of meats!

Ok so my friend's burger, fries, and drink was $14. Check out what I got for $12.

Bread. Every table gets this fresh bread and butter to start.

Then you get a dish of coleslaw.

And I ordered the Country Fried Steak with two sides. I went with Mashed Potatoes and French Fries (didn't want peas). And do you think the sides were on the same plate? Nope. I got two complete sides.

Needless to say, I was full and definitely got my money's worth!

    MORE MORE MORE to come!!!

Re: 05.24 thru 05.28.07 -- Star Wars Celebration IV! Los Angeles, CA

Through it all, what makes the convention fun is the people. They just share this rabid passion for this franchise called Star Wars. It's kind of amazing just how INTO it they are.

I consider myself a geek about Star Wars. I can quote several lines of dialogue, i buy a TON of merchandise and collectibles, and well... thats' about it.

There are some though, who take it a step further.

    COSTUMES

Halloween has lost all meaning after you see how well crafted these outfits are. Some stay true to the original costume, some customize it to make it their own. And that's probably why the movies are so popular. It's one of those worlds that anyone of us can fit in somehow.

Here's just sampling of those I saw on Thursday.

Here's a Fett character of some type.

Even Sand People like to get out of the desert.

    Uh oh... camera wars!

    Some Jedi and a Padme

    Jawas! Uttini!

Many get their kid into the act. Here's a father / son Darth Maul duo..

Kit Fisto? More like KID Fisto!

    Kid Leia and Kid Vader

    Here's a Baby Wookiee..

    Vader on vacation??

    BOOM BOX FETT!

    Aren't they cute???

These folks came in bed sheets!

Looking for droids? Not a problem. i got ya covered.

Careful walking the street, you might come across Durge....

    IT'S NOT OVER YET, KID.
