    Disney's Musical Oddities

See if you can figure this out:

    1. Two completely different songs from two completely different movies (one Disney, one Touchstone). The songs have the same title.

    2. Two songs with different titles that are basically the same song, from two different Disney movies.

    Anyone?

    1. Two completely different songs from two completely different movies (one Disney, one Touchstone). The songs have the same title. CLUE: One of the movies is live action with animation, the other is live action based on animation (more or less...).

    2. Two songs with different titles that are basically the same song, from two different Disney movies. CLUE: The two songs are by the same composer in back-to-back films.

    Does that help?

    Here's my guess:

    1. "If You Believe" - but only if you make the stretch that a Miramax release is a Disney film...

    2. ...I'll bet you're going for a Randy Newman track here, aren't you?

Actually, now that I read your clue - I'll revise my first answer.
"Sooner or Later" was in Song of the South and Dick Tracy.

    still working on question #2...

...and my specific guess for #2: "You've Got a Friend in Me" & "If I Didn't Have You" (though I think they sound pretty different - I can hear the similarities).

...or maybe you're talking about Phil Collins' "Brother Bear" / "Tarzan" copycat score...

You're right! "Sooner or Later" is the title of two different songs used in two different movies. Different songs, same title. The Song of the South version was sung by (I believe) Hattie McDaniel (Mammy in Gone With The Wind). The Dick Tracy version was, of course, sung by Madonna and written by none other than Stephen Sondheim. (And it's funny how this is being discussed in another thread right now!)

Still working on #2. Randy Newman and Phil Collins are good guesses, but not what I was thinking. These two songs have nearly identical melodies, but the meter is different. One is in 3/4 time and is a lesser known song from the 1st of the back-to-back movies. The other is in 4/4 time and very well known from the 2nd.

    Time for another clue?

for the answer to #2... I'm inclined to think this is from the Alan Menken canon. I'll have to look up my playlist, am I getting warmer?

Definitely warmer than Alan Menken would like you to be!

Oooh, I think I know #2. Is it "Beyond the Laughing Sky," a cut song from Alice in Wonderland, and "Second Star to the Right" from Peter Pan?

"Be Our Guest," and "Le Poisson" are virtually the same tune, and "Human Again" is even the samer!
So full of Disney Magic, my eyes are blue.

But they are all in triple time though. His clue said they had virtually the same melodic line but different meter.

Well, I think that "Be Our Guest" is in 4/4... so that might be the answer. Menken is a shameless recycler - though I still like his music. Everytime I listen to Mermaid, I think of LSOH...
