There are lots of different bootleg versions of Walt Disney's "Song of the South" in the stratosphere, online, at conventions and swap meets. Did you know it is the highest grossing film of all time (other than current releases) never to have been made available on DVD? So there is a lot of demand.
Of the ones out there, most were mastered either from the European PAL VHS videotapes (Disney marketed the title there in the 80's and 90's) or from the Japanese or Hong Kong NTSC laserdiscs of the 80's - 90's. The laserdisc mastered titles have better visual quality, but those copies from the Japanese master have Japanese subtitles during song sequences (the discs were bilingual, but the songs were not dubbed).
Some of the bootleg DVDs have odd non-Disney extras. One of the cleverest fakes pretends to be a legal version available at Disneyland Paris and French Disney Stores and carries stickers to that effect. It's not true.
Which is which is hard to say.
If Disney refuses to make the film available, they should be acknowledged as having abandoned their commercial rights and it should be allowed into the public domain.

Do you have a source on that? I'm just curious, because I think "This is Cinerama" grossed more and is not on DVD. I would think there are other films out there that outgrossed SOTS and have not made it to DVD. They just are less "controversial."
From what I understand SOTS made $3 million in it's initial release then with re-releases padded it's total to around $35 million.
I have not watched the bootleg DVDs people are selling. But I purchased a PAL tape I think either in England or at Disneyland Paris in the 90s. We have a VCR that plays both US tapes and PAL tapes. I tried to make a copy of it for my aunt, and the quality of the copy was terrible.
I have a copy I forget if I got it on eBay or at a comic convention. The movie quality is very good indeed. If anyone ever wants a copy don't waste your money just let me know I'm always willing to make copys of this Disney classic.
