    It coulda been worse.

You remember Six Flags AstroWorld? That was a fiasco just waiting to happen.

Re: Should Disney Buy Cedar Fair? - Motley Fool article

CoasterNet gives an accurate account of Great America (Santa Clara), as well as the various name changes (and ownership) the park has under gone.

The park was built and opened by tne Marriott's hotel chain company. During our nation's becentinial, the park opened and beared the original moniker, Marriott's Great America. Although GA was profitable, in 1984 Marriott's became tired of running theme parks (they had already sold a Chicago based sister Great America to Six Flags). The Santa Clara park was sold to Kings Entertainment Company (KECO). Under KECO, the park dropped Marriott's from the name, and the park simply became known as Great America.

In 1988, big fish Paramout swallowed up KECO, and renamed the park, Paramount's Great America. Paramount's theme park division management team were completely enamoured with park, and with the prospect of expanding it's size, plus making the rides more family oriented, immersive and competitive. Sadly, corporate owners Viacom and CBS didn't feel the same way.

Thus, the park was sold to Cedar Fair in 2006, and the name reverted back to simply Great America. My concern is whether Cedar Fair will be able to maintain licensing agreements for the rides and other attractions to bear names of properties belonging to Paramount, CBS, Nickelodean, etc. Time will tell.

IIRC, Cedar Fair hold exclusive rights to the Peanuts characters from United Media.

This is true, as they inherited these rights when they purchased Knott's parks. I do hope to see attractions at Great America based on Snoopy and the Peanuts gang. This, however, would be rather dismal in the abcense of the varied array of licensed properties that Great America is currently using - which came via Paramount. For the first time in it's history, the park has even had a parade.

GA's in-park Crockadile Dundee water park is a unique marvel, compared to any park the worldover. I do think that Cedar Fair is proud of it too. Paul Hogan himself was there for the grand opening. For the park to exchange this exciting theme for one loosely based on Peanuts would be utterly disheartening. Let's hope that it remains vibrant and exciting, and that the park maintains it's current theme.

The possibility of the 49'ers opening a new stadium right next to Great America is a big bright ray of hope! Can you imagine the influx of visiters to the area and the marketing opportunities this would bring?

I do believe it was renamed "Knott's Great America" for the 2007 season.

*buzzer sounds* Oh, I'm so sorry, but that's incorrect.

It's still offically listed as "Great America".
