Was it as good as the original?? I loved the original, Devine was awsome, Rickei Lake was awsome, and the cast was so was Ruth Brown!
I always hate second remakes since the first always seems better.

Wife saw the first one - she liked this one better.

Say, where did the POLL come from? I didn't make a poll? Oh I see.......my thread was mingled with another.

Is it true to the original? Did they ruin the music with contemporary pop junk?

I didn't see the original - but wife did - and again, liked this one better. It's a total musical - almost all the lines are sung.

The music was pretty true to 1962 era.....

Thanks! That's exactly what I needed to know. I was really concerned that they would ruin it.

I went through 4 pages of threads and didn't see one, so I started a thread...but no worries - not a big deal.

Glad you enjoyed the movie. Wife and I loved it!

I don't think it's a stretch. Sir Clinksalot has a point - it's definitely one of it's kind for the summer and definitely stands out from the rest. I could deem it "BEST" for the Summer.

When I think of "BEST" I think of ...

Hey, this movie is really award-worthy and a movie that will be talked about during award season. The only other summer movie that we can say that about is Ratatouille.

John Travolta was absolutely freaking hilarious in this movie and I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see him up for a best supporting actor (or maybe even actress ) nomination.

IMO, this should have been one of those movies released in December for award season consideration. Hopefully it will get it's due.

Since I dearly love the original film, I was highly suspect of the "Hairspray" remake... but I loved it! Great period costuming, locations, sets, color and detail, fun music, still a great message. Nicely shot and cut. They even managed to get a vivid "Technicolor" look in the print. JT is no Divine, but he is not objectionable (save his singing). Not as rich in fascinating specifics, character moments and laughs as the Waters original, but a very, very fun time. I want to live in that world! I'll see it again.

Be sure to note Tracy's bedstand reading library...

The film is rated PG and only a shade above "G". Wolfette would love Hairspray, and it would love her, too. HS is both zany and touching at the same time. They were giving away free DVD previews at Circuit City yesterday.
