Re: Little Mermaid Denver - report from opening night of previews

Tinkerbell is still in the works...trailer is at:

For those Wicked fans...Kristin Chenoweth is supposed to be Rosetta.

The Little Mermaid III was pushed to Feb 2008, haven't seen any data that it's been shelved altogether.

Re: Little Mermaid Denver - report from opening night of previews

This might be a dumb question...but how is Ariel presented in the show? Does she "walk" or just "swim" around with harnesses or sit on a sea shell like in the parks?

DisneyPrincess4590, apparently all of the mermaids (including Ariel) wear skirts with tails mounted up on the back as shown by the picture above.

Saw the show last night. Overall, it was very good. I was not that impressed with the mermaid's tail combo. The tail sort of looked like an extra appendage.

Honestly, I think it needs a little more work. The proportions just weren't right. And they use heelies to glide around on stage. So you have the sudden stops and start of them trying to get going still fluidly. It works sometimes, but more often then not, it's a bust.

And the woman who directs this also directed the Aladdin show at the Hyperion Theatre in DCA. Guess Disney will stretch that one out onto a full-blown musical sometime down the road as well.

Re: Little Mermaid Denver - report from opening night of previews

Just saw it about two hours ago and i thought it was amazing.
The use of "Heel-ies" was inventive and had me laughing.
(The use of wires and stuff reminded me of Aladdin. Makes sense it was the same director)

I'll go into full details for it when I get home on Tuesday!

New to this board. Just wanted to let you all know that the Denver Post has a new story on the show. At the top of the page watch the many photos in the slide show.

it takes a while to see them all

do a search on the site for "reviews" of the show by theatergoers who have seen it

Re: Little Mermaid Denver - report from opening night of previews

I saw it Saturday with my family and we all LOVED it. Where to start...
Costumes: I think the use of the heelies was a great solution to the problem of fluid "underwater" movement on stage. I HATE heelies, so it was cool to see them finally have a purpose that doesn't involve allowing kids to be annoying. The skirt/tail thing didn't really bother me because: come on, you're seeing a play about a mermaid, can we suspend belief just a little?

Set: the water effects were beautiful. The sets were great and the effects were executed wonderfully.

Singing/songs: My personal favorite was probably "She's in Love" which is between the Mersisters and Flounder. It was really cute and reminded me of Hercules with the muses. The original songs were great, and the new ones were right up there. The only one I personally didn't like as well was "poor unfortunate souls" but that's just because Pat Carroll’s original is SO good. The actress playing Ursula was great though, maybe my favorite, and her new song "I Want the Good Times Back" was amazing.

I personally didn't care that much for "under the sea," just because the costuming and such reminded me of a drag show (granted, a very good one). The audience however gave it the longest applause of any of the numbers.

Overall it was well worth it. There were enough suprises while still staying true to Disney's masterpiece, some minor characters got some bigger parts, tactfully done and enjoyable, while the main characters stayed true to form and dazzled.

    Fabulous....really beautiful.

I was not thrilled with Triton- he did not have enough presence for my taste and Flounder looks like a kid in yellow beach shorts (which of course, he is) but otherwise lovely......

LOVED...loved loved loved....Ursula. Amazing costume and GREAT lines!
