    Tarzan on Broadway cancelled.

I was rather surprised to be in Times Sq a few days ago (Wednesday 7/25) and see that the theather that I thought was still housing the Tarzan show was dark. I don't recall any mention (especially here on MC) about the show getting axed. But sure enough the sign on the door had directions on how obtain a refund for shows already purchased. Tarzan never really seemed like a good fit for Broadways to begin with.

After a quick conversation with a gentleman working across the street at the Beauty and Beast theather, he told me the announcement was made and production stopped with two weeks notice. I was very surprised having seen Tarzan last year I thought it needed some work but didn't think it would be cancelled like that. I figured they would have stopped selling any future dates and honored those already purchased. I guess the show was really tanking big time.

I thought since the theater was available now, that maybe Beauty and the Beast could occupy the Richard Rogers now instead of just closing. But apparently the theather is too small and The Little Mermaid was designed for the Lunt-Fontanne also and couldn't be moved either.

I believe there were a few threads about it closing somewhere here, and July 8th was it's last performance. Surprising that the announcement and closure came so close together, but also it is not surprising, based on the reviews, that it closed.

I did see it the first summer it was out, and it was ok, but nothing spectacular.

yoyo if you can find a link to a previous mention I would be very appreciative. I search all over MC and couldn't find one.

I also saw it last June (2006) and thought it was just okay, I was just more surprised with the suddeness of the closure.

I gotta say it... I'm happy Ron Logan's Beauty and the Beast outlasted Tarzan. lol Though I'm sad it's over now.

Even though I did love the cast recording, I'm not too surprised it didn't do so well. Aside from poor reviews, Tarzan just doesn't have the same appeal as B&B, Lion King, or Little Mermaid.

the majority of the songs on the recording are pretty good, just not the jane ones mostly. bummer it closed so early, hopefully they can at least do a tour.

Beauty and the Beast closed on July 29th, and the Lunt-Fontane will house The Little Mermaid starting in November IIRC.
