I found the book, in paperback, at Target this morning and will start reading it soon. I am looking forward to it very much.

Re: The Golden Compass - The Official Thread

This looks really interesting. Not my kind of movie but it looks good.
Does anyone know how big a part in the book Nicole Kidman's character has? I'm not sure I can stomach her for 2 hours

    My daemon's a snow leopard!
    I renamed him Matt
I'm dependable, modest, solitary, inquisitive and spontaneous!
    That was fun.
    Good morning, son
    In twenty years from now
Maybe we'll both sit down and have a few beers
And I can tell you 'bout today
And how I picked you up and everything changed
    It was pain
    Sunny days and rain
I knew you'd feel the same things...

I have this book on order at the library. Their copies are all checked out right now. A snow leopard sounds very cool. I'm not too happy at being a mouse!

Retake the test then. I stuck with the first choice though. I tried again and was a Tiger and again and was a Racoon. I liked the Lion the best.

Unfortunitly for you, NeverNeverland, Nicole Kidman will be in at least half of the movie. Sorry. I think she will be good in this film because her charatcter is cold as ice, and she sort of looks like that in real life. Don't get me wrong, I love her, I'm just saying she is a bit frosty.

I didn't know that Wendygirl and Lost Boy are brother and sister! How cute!

I knew you could do that, but I believe in sticking with the first one as that is probably the most true and I was trying to be honest with my answers and not fudge it. If I retook the test, I would be manipulating my answers so I'll stick with the mouse. The mouse's name is at least cool.

I really like Nicole Kidman. I loved her in The Hours, Stepford Wives, Moulin Rouge and that Chanel No. 5 commercial. I'm hoping Invasion will be good and am looking forward to her in this. I think she is stunningly beautiful and could never figure out why Tom Cruise left her though she is probably better off without him.

I am so excited about this movie and think Nicole wasa perfect choice. They are releasing anniversary editions of the books at the end of the month in hardcovers. No movie art on the covers (yay!). My paperbacks are falling apart from having read them so many times.

How much of the controversial issues do you think will be trimmed from the movies?

That is a good question. The author does have some issues with the Catholic church, especially at the end of the book. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a boycott from the Catholic church if the movie serves up everything in the book.

Are these movies anti-god? I just got this e-mail saying that the books are about children killing God? I guess it was from some articles at snopes.com. I haven't read the books or seen the movie, but was excited from the previews it looked great. Now I'm not so sure.

My 12 year old and my 9 year old have read the series....but I haven't. They loved the series and are excited for the movie.

Interesting snopes article, but it doesn't give specifics from the books, at least not specific enough for me. Sounds like a judgment call.

I have this as my silent reading book at school. I'm always shushing the kids so I can get it finished before the movie comes out!

I also got the whole "Christians beware! Boycott the anti-God movie!" email a couple of weeks ago about this. It's no big deal. The author has clearly stated that he is strongly atheist and that his books are about killing God, but from what I have dug up it's just the same as Narnia being a Christian parable. In Narnia, parallels can be drawn between Aslan and Christ (sacrifice and rising from the dead and all that) along with other things, but for the average reader/viewer this is totally missed. I read the Narnia series several times without catching any religious overtones, and had to have them pointed out before I realized that they were there. Golden Compass looks much the same. Kids will simply see a magical, fanciful tale set in a far off magical world and feel entertained. If someone wants to dissect the story and over-analyze it then they'll find anti-God stuff, but otherwise it's a perfectly safe and fun fairy tale.

You beat me to it Melonballer! Those polar bears look awesome!

Jen, as far as your question about this film being anti-religious, the film has taken a lot of that out, but the trilogy definitly has a lot of God issues and church issues going on. But my thought on that is, if one is exposed to an opposing view and your faith does not stand up to that view, then maybe you need to look at your faith more closely. In other words, your faith should be strong enough to handle whatever movie or book expressing a different view is thrown at you. To drw attention to this movie and to boycott it only brings more attention to it. Watch the movie, read the book and prehaps bring about some discussion with those around you. Could be interesting.
