Disney Channel Movies - Why do they air so late?

Tonight is the big High School Musical Premiere on Disney Channel. Here it's airing at 9 p.m.

Now, my 8 year old has been waiting for this for a long time - but his bed time is 9 p.m. (as I'm sure that most of the demographic has a 9-10 p.m. bedtime).

So, my question is, why don't they air their movies at 7 p.m.? They are always showing their movies so late, and we have the constant battle as to whether the kids can stay up late or not.

I'm guessing you don't have DirecTv. They have two Disney Channels, one that is on EST and the other either on PST or your time zone. So if I had wanted to see the movie, it would air at 6PM on the first Disney Channel since 6PM/PST is 9PM/EST. That's one good thing about having satellite tv.

If your son can't stay up that late to watch it, you could always record it for him but I'm sure it will airing like crazy afterwards.

we have direct and it airs here at 5 and then also at 8 tonight

We just have cable - We used to have the satellite with East and West - that was nice. We do have a DVR, but for some reason it's just not the same as watching it when it airs (try reasoning with an 8 and 6 year old).
