Thumbs up High School Musical 2: Let's Discuss!

OK! Since there isn't a topic yet, I just had to start one!

Who else GROANED when they saw Gabriella and Troy in blue and white against a blue sky/cloud background and TOTALLY thought it was a send up to the Year of a Million Dreams?!?

I'm not the only one, am I???

Also, I thought it was filmed like one looooong music video!

So did you like it? Y/N? Discuss!

I bought the soundtrack on Tuesday, so I was really waiting to put action to the songs. I'm really happy how it turned out overall!

Re: High School Musical 2: Let's Discuss!

Actually, I like it a lot better than the first one. A few things to note:

-Troy's song as he shares his emotions walking through the golf course after they break up? LAME

-The lanterns floating randomly at the end? WEIRD.

-Songs were cute, and I like that the characters seemed more likeable in this one. They seemed more like real people and not overexagerated stereotypes.

I think I also liked this one much better because it reminded me of the Saved By the Bell episodes when they all work at Mr. Carosi's country club. The ones with the wife from the King of Queens? I seemed a lot like that. Also, the drama teacher had a very minimal, which I like a lot, since she was such an annoying character!

All in all, it was cute. Not outstanding, but not horrible. A decent made for TV movie, which was not awful, but not outstanding.

And I will be buying the soundtrack. Some really cute numbers in it. Not anything award winning, but hummable songs that will be fun to come up randomly on the Ipod.

Just a friendly MOD reminder that we have a "naughty" word filter. Please don't try to go around it.

Re: High School Musical 2: Let's Discuss!

It was missing the campy fun of the original. The original was over the top and silly, whereas the second film concentrated on fleshing out the characters and serious drama.

The two soundtracks stack up fairly well next to one another save for the vast improvement of Gabriella's solo song in the second film over the first.

The plot was an absolute mess. There was barely a central question, and entire plot points were dropped or skimmed over in their resolution.

However, I did enjoy the film greatly. I loved the development of Ryan's character, and even the redemption of Sharpay seemed genuine and in character (instead of tacked on as in the original). I would have loved to see more of a development between Gabriella and Ryan whether as just friends or romantically, and I'm hoping they touch on that more in the third film.

Just out of curiosity, was any one else really put off by that fact that the plot centered around just Troy, and not Gabriella? She seemed to barely be in the film.

I didn't really like it actually. Some of the songs were good, but all of the sounded really "electronic" or "tiny." It sounded like the used the auto-tune feature WAY WAY too much in recording. It also seemed to me that the lip-syncing didn't match up all the time. What I mean by the is that the pre-recorded film's soundtrack (different from the one you buy) didn't seem to match lip movements a lot of the time.

The story was okay. Predictable, but parts did deal with interesting issues (such as finding yourself, relationships, college entrance etc.). But I wasn't overly impressed. I'd give it a 2 1/2 out of 5.

As for the comment, I used the asterisks to remind myself about the filter.

I thought so too! I didn't like this one nearly as much as the first one.

Re: High School Musical 2: Let's Discuss!

    I liked it! A lot!

Ashley Tisdale is really good as Sharpay. Her comic chops have been well-honed on Suite Life w/Zack and Cody. Sure, she overacts, but that's perfect for this type of movie. And I agree with Mr. Ness above that the plot was more Troy-centric than Troy and Gabriella. Given Zac Efron's career arc, it's not too surprising. But I hope the plot pendulum swing back towards Gabriella in HSM3.

Of the musical numbers, I really like "I Don't Dance" and "All For One". I'm a sucker for the high-tempo, upbeat songs. Although, I'm not too big on the first single and opening number, "What Time Is It." It almost seems like it's trying too hard to get the movie going.

Nice observations YYF! The lanterns were totally random. I was scratching my head about that. And yes, this totally felt like a SBTB episode when they were working at the country club. LOL!!!

My main disconnect with the movie--and I admit, this is silly and I'm not sure Disney could do anything about it--is the title. The first movie was set up perfectly by its title: "High School Musical". You knew the main plot premise before the movie aired. It was set in high school and there was going to be a musical (or at least auditions). However, the sequel was not about high school or a school musical. Following the format of the first movie title, it should have been called: "Country Club Talent Show." But I probably sound like a crazy man right about now. LOL! It's a sequel. Don't take it so seriously. The title has to be HSM2, right?

All that aside, I really did like the movie. Two thumbs up!

I liked it, but call me a sucker for good clean kid friendly entertainment.
I thought that Troy's solo as he was frolicing through the golf course was really cheesy. His reflection in the water hazard could have been done better, even the little ones will pick up on that one.
I liked the "I Don't Dance" song. Even though we all know that Corbin Bleu is all about the dancing. It was really fun. I'm a huge fan of Ryan.
I thought Ashley did a good job in this one as well.
Well, I think you're crazy, I think you're crazy, I think you're crazy, just like me.

Re: High School Musical 2: Let's Discuss!

Ahahaha Troy's EMO, soul searching, dressed in black, marching up the hill solo was the BEST scene EVER of ANY of the 2 movies. Pure comedy gold. I'd watch that entire thing all over again just to see the entire scene (sadly I missed some of it).

Re: High School Musical 2: Let's Discuss!

I started to watch the movie, and wasn't expecting a whole lot
of it. The first movie was pretty good, but I quickly lost interest
    in this 2nd movie . . .

A while later I channel surfed into it again, and gave it another
try. At the point where Troy and Gabriella were on the golf course,
and Troy's solo on the golf course UGGGGGG! And Yes, I caught
the "Dream Clouds" and costumes at the end ~ heck they were
even SINGING about DREAMS! double ugggggg What did surprise
me, as others have said, Ashley Tisdale did a respectable job
portraying Sharpey's over the top character, in this "Saved By the Bell"
type movie. Suppose they will need to copy Frankie and Annette
beach movie for one of the High School Musical Sequels. (sigh)

Stayed with the rest of the movie, and it was so-so. Some of the
gorgeous sets seemed way over the top ~ it even threw the movie
off, for some of the bizarre "music video" type filming. Just wasn't
right for a full fledged movie. It would have been ok, but just for
    extra's on the dvd.

Indy Joel, I think you're right about similarities to other musicals,
One of the songs reminded my one of the recent Hairspray songs
(I will have to go back to my Hairspray CD to identify the specific
    song)

Overall, the 1st movie was better. The 2nd was just mediocre.
I think the fad is wearing fast.

    Totally thought that as well!

I laughed so hard at that! It was so cheesy!!

    As for my review:

I liked it! My favorite songs were the first one, last one, and You Are the Music in Me.

My favorite part was when Troy and Chad walked into the kitchen talking in British voices. We went back and watched that part a few times, it was too funny!

I don't like the fact that they released it at the end of August. I go back to school in a week and hearing "School's Out!" doesn't help at all! They should have released it at the end of June/ begining of July.

Did anyone else see Miley Cyrus at the end? How random was that?

Can't wait for the dance along and 3rd movie!

edit: And it got 17.24 million views. http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...goryid=14&cs=1
