Williams may score final HP film

Williams may score final HP film
At a recent lecture in the US, John Williams, former composer of the Harry Potter movie soundtrack, was asked if he was hoping to score the last Harry Potter film. He stated that he was sorely missed on the last two films (not to detract from Doyle's or Hooper's excellent work). He said with confidence that he thinks he will be back for the last and then added that he hopes he is.

As previously reported, Nicholas Hooper will be scoring
    Half-Blood Prince.

Any thoughts? I like John Williams Music but he has a habit of repeating the same themes over and over with just a few changes. The music in Goblet of Fire is my favorite score so far (Not the Rock and Roll Yule Ball Music though. They could have left that out as far as I am concerned. It just didn't fit Harry Potter at all.)
Peter Pan Forever!!! I Will Never Grow Up.

If he want to, fine. If he doesn't get it fine. I have liked the music from the past two movies that he didn't do.

I really liked the music from the OotP. I noticed it in some of the key scenes and thought it was great.

Re: Williams may score final HP film

I absolutely loved what hye did for the first three films but I also love the music from GOF and OOTP. I think I like the 2 soundtracks better that he didn't score but I think that has to do more with the movies than with him. The first couple of movies were along the lines of "Hey look! Magic!!!" As the characters get older, the movies become more emotional and darker, and therefore so does the soundtrack. I think I would like to have him come back for thr final film so he can revisit some of the music and themes from the first few movies and tie them all together.

He is going to be a busy man. He has the Indy film, Lincoln film and the Potter film to do.

Re: Williams may score final HP film

I think Williams really set the stage in the firist three films and the non-Williams film composers really made sure that they didn't contribute a lousy score for that reason. But you really can't picture Harry Potter without the fantastic theme that Williams wrote, and each score got progressively better with his third being the best. The first film really is a bit too much, I admit, but still... what great music!

Williams repeats themes but if you really listen, he doesn't overdo it at all in the sequels. (this isn't superman 2 where they got someone else to pretty much play the exact same thing... nor is it spider-man 2 and 3 where you pretty much just use the music in the first). One thing you can always count on are NEW themes for new characters. I think the Harry Potter films without Williams suffer a bit in that regard. They're good background music but they don't really do much else.

What.. never believed in styles of music?

    Marches?
    Operas?

Should all music of the same type be just thrown out as 'the same'?

To me things like the Imperial March sound nothing like the Raiders of the Lost Ark..

Might as well call all of John Phillip Sousas work garbage because he wrote a lot of Marches!

You can't deny that Williams has scored some of the most memorable and recognizable scores in modern film

    Star Wars
    Indiana Jones
    Superman
    Jaws
    ET
    Jurassic Park
    Harry Potter

    and many many many more.

Re: Williams may score final HP film

I'd love it if Williams composed the last one! I sorely missed the chance to hear him expand on the Fawkes' Theme and Voldemort's unofficial theme in OoTP or HBP.

Williams is amazing because he uses similar motiffs for completely different songs. The Love Theme in Attack of the Clones is a reworked Imperial March - betcha none of the "Williams songs sound the same" group knew that!

Knowing his style, I was excited at the prospect of hearing Fawkes' theme in a more subdued, mournful tone in HBP at the end when Fawkes is grieving.

There's certainly great opportunity for him to "catch up", as it were, and really make an awesome final film to the series!

    Here's hoping he gets it!

    * Let it be known that I appreciate the GoF composer to try and put up a good effort. And, while I would be disappointed if Williams doesn't get DH (seeing as he WANTS it, which is a nice change of pace!), the composer for OoTP stands on his own two legs and uses a lot of Williams style of using previous songs as influences in current works. Dumbledore's Army is amazing! I certainly wouldn't mind if he continues!

There was only one time where I realized that Williams ripped on himself is in one of his tracks from AMERICAN JOURNEY where it sounds exactly like "The Land Race" from FAR AND AWAY.

I agree, and compare the themes of Jurassic Park with what he did on the sequel The Lost World...(he didnt do #3) you'll notice a very different song but with the same type of feeling to it. Understanding the process of making variations on the sound of a theme to use in the movie is very important.

IMO John Williams is a modern legend, he does have quite varied themes in many of his movies. I have his Spielberg/Williams collaboration CD from a long time ago and I still listen to it from time to time.

I'm also a fan of Alan Silvestri, Barry Goldsmith, Howard Shore and Nobuo Uematsu

I hope so! I love John Williams and I love POA soundtrack best. I didn't like the GOF of music as much and I did like a lot of OotP music but to me it sounded as though it had that underlying score of "One Day More" from Les Miserables. Which is probably why I liked it.
