With the surprise announcement Wednesday of a $10 million gift from Walt Disney World, Florida Hospital made it clear that the competition to operate a world-class pediatric hospital in Orlando is now a three-way contest.
Orlando Regional Healthcare's children's hospital, which attracts patients nationally and internationally, is associated with one of the world's most beloved athletes.
The Nemours Foundation, which says it will build its proposed children's hospital at Lake Nona, boasts it has a $4 billion endowment.
Now Florida Children's Hospital -- sometimes forgotten in the back-and-forth between Nemours and Orlando Regional's Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children -- has some major mojo of its own.
"This contribution is part of our ongoing commitment to making dreams come true for the children of Central Florida," Meg Crofton, Disney World's president, said in announcing the $10 million contribution during a rainy news conference at Florida Hospital's main campus near downtown Orlando.
