I totally remember that one. There were a few like that, all from the early 70's: Asylum and Torture Garden come to mind. Many of them were based on Robert Bloch (author of Psycho) stories. There was one story about an evil, murderous Santa Claus, a Dorian Grey-type story, one about a man who cut up his wife into pieces and all the pieces came back to life individually, and one about a cruel headmaster of a school for the blind that gets his comeuppance in a very gruesome way. Any of those ring a bell? I can never remember which story goes to which movie.
Does anyone even bother with signatures anymore?

Sounds like something I saw on MST3K once.

Re: Horror films, what's your favorite?

I'm not a slasher fan... so, stuff like Nightmare on Elm Street aren't on my list.

Top fave of all time would be Das Kabinet des Doktor Caligari.

I like the classic films and the classic-type monsters... so, my other top faves:

    Shaun of the Dead
    Night of the Living Dead
    28 Days Later
    Nosferatu
    Dracula
    Bram Stoker's Dracula
    Shadow of the Vampire
    The Others
    House of Wax
    (especially when seen in 3-D)
    Der Golem
    Ab-Normal Beauty
    Tale of Two Sisters
    Audition
    The Host
    Ringu
    The Grudge

    And the list goes on...

I really hate all these "Torture Porn" movies out nowadays. While it didn't hold on its own as a movie, "Silent Hill" had some excellent makeup effects. Seriously, most of that stuff freaked me out. Some of my favorites are, 28 Days Later, House on Haunted Hill (1959 version, it's so campy), Night of the Living Dead, Shaun of the Dead, and Dawn of the Dead (1978 version).

Yes! That's the one. Narrow hallway lined with...ok no spoiler... Wasn't there also a story about a valentine gift in a box, or was that a different movie?

Oogie, used to watch MST3k ALL the time! One of my favorite lines from that show was when a Godzilla-like monster was about to eat a little Japanese boy and the kid shouts "Don't eat me, you'll still be hungry an hour later!"

I see Pumpkinhead made the list- I've always liked that movie! Anyone else a fan of that one? Nice creepy atmosphere.

Wow Elly, what a first date movie! The only movie I remember seeing in school was The Red Balloon...

Since we're talking about 70's horror for the moment, does anyone remember the one with the twin boys named Niles and (cant remember the other's name) called "The Other" (not the Others)? One was bad and one was good- haven't seen it in a long time but it I remember it being scary, and perhaps worthy of being on the list.

And how about "The Bad Seed", from the fifties about the evil little girl. Would you consider it a horror film?

I have seen The Other. An odd trivia fact... John Ritter had a supporting role in that movie. It was more creepy than scary, IMO, but it's been a long time since I've seen it too.

I probably would call The Bad Seed a horror movie, but more of the psychological kind. BTW, in Los Angeles, there is a theater company currently performing The Bad Seed... with a 40+ year old man in drag in the role of the little girl. It's pretty hilarious! It's ending it's run very soon (if it hasn't already), but if you can see it, I'd highly recommend it... there's a lot more in the play (particularly about homosexuality) in the play than there is in the movie.

Is Pet Semetary a horror movie? Cause if so, count that as #1 for me. that movie creeped me the hell out when I was little. I was always afraid to get out of bed in the middle of the night, thinking someone would swipe at my achilles tendon with a knife.

One that scares me the most? Blair Witch Project, the whole using video to make it real thing is really cool.

My favorite is Halloween, the original.

i have to agree with you on this one...everytime someone gets their Achilles cut in a movie i'm guaranteed to physically cringe. Both House of Wax (the new version) and Hostel had me bringing my feet up onto the seat while watching them at the theater! Dunno why its such a creepy effect, but man i'm getting the creepies just thinking about it
