    Song of the south

"The first books I ever read
    were the Uncle Remus stories.
    Ever since then, these stories
    have been my special favorites.
    I've just been waiting until
I could develop the proper medium
to bring them to the screen."

    Walt Disney, 1946

Have any of you seen this film? I have not. I have read about it. I remember reading and having read to me the stories. Splash Mountain is positively my favorite ride.

I have seen it, it's entertaining to be sure. I can see why some would concider it "controversial" but have never thought it so bad that it needs to be locked away. That's been discussed to death on here though.

I've seen it and enjoyed it quite a bit. the character Uncle Remus is just so loveable... regardless of how inaccurate the backdrop seems to be.

The animated segments... among the best around. Such funny characters and stories. It's a favorite and I'm happy that Splash Mountain is such a popular attraction.

I've actually got a copy of the movie on DVD from Europe. I'm thinking about having a Song of the South party after the New Year and inviting a bunch of MiceChatters to come watch it with me.

That's intriging, transfered from the film stock to dvd? It's never been released on any "consumer media" right?

It's a good movie, not a great movie. I think a lot of it has to do with it being a "forbidden fruit". Although is has possibly the best Disney song of all time Zip-a-dee-do-dah.

    Re: Song of the south

I recently saw Song of the South again and I also watched The Adventures of Huck Finn (with Elijah Wood). I honestly felt that Huck Finn is more controversial and has a lot more darker themes than Song of the South. Don' know why Disney doesn't want to release Song on DVD when they got Huck Finn out.

I totally agree, again I've never seen SOTS, and I sure don't want ANYONE to be offended by a film, forsure. I guess times change and stereotypes can be taken as "offensive". I guess I just thought the beauty of the film songs, animations and the story would out-weigh any of the "controversial" stuff it may convey from history of the south.

Although it's beating a dead horse with a stick.. I agree. I just wish they would release it and let the market speak for itself. I haven't seen this movie since I was little and have actually contemplated getting a region free DVD player just so I could buy it from Europe and watch it again.

my advice is this: those who dont want to see the movie, when it comes out on dvd, dont buy it. however dont stop those who do want to see the movie(like me).

    Re: Song of the south

this may not have been the smartest things to do but while on break I put SOS on. It wasn't the best idea for two main reasons:One being that this was at Disneyland Two: not many people are familiar with the books. I discovered that some Cast members assumed the "tar babie" was some sort of racial slur or reference.

For me, as an African American, the insulting thing is the way slavery is depicted. it seems in an effort by Disney to neutralize the film and not harm anyone, it bears an heir of ignorance

I'm glad Disney doesn't own the rights to Blazing Saddles.
