    Audiences gobble up 'Enchanted'

Disney film nets $14.8 million heading into Friday

Disney's princess pic "Enchanted" casted a spell over Thanksgiving auds, grossing an estimated $14.8 million from 3,632 theaters.

The PG-rated family comedy which centers on an animated princess who is thrust into the live action world, charmed $8 million on Wednesday and another $6.8 million on Thanksgiving day.

According to Rentrak, "Enchanted's" $8 million ranks as the third best Wednesday opener in November behind Warner Bros.' 2003 title "The Matrix Revolutions" ($24.3 million) and 1999's "Pokemon: The First Movie" ($10.1 million).

"Enchanted's" first day gross also marks a high for Disney live action fare bowing on a Wednesday in November. Pic's opening day ranks behind the $9.57 million that "Toy Story 2" generated on its Wednesday before Thanksgiving when it expanded from an exclusive run at L.A.'s El Capitan to theaters nationwide.

"Enchanted" is currently tracking ahead of the competition and should hold the top spot at the box office throughout the weekend.

Coming in second behind "Enchanted" over the Wednesday-Thursday frame was the Sony-Screen Gems ensemble pic "This Christmas" which grossed a cheery $8.4 million from 1,802 engagements.

Fox's R-rated opener "Hitman," based on the popular videogame franchise, followed close behind in third, collecting $8 million from 2,401 theaters.

Thank you so much for your kind words!

    From Thursday:

Early reviews have been promising, and the film's five-day boxoffice feast is expected to reach at least $35 million.

Nice projection, after casually surveying a few different theatres this weekend where 'Enchanted' was selling out each showing it could very well be higher. Can't wait to see how this plays out by Monday.
Might have to send some pigeons over with some flowers to the R.O.D. Building with Congrats notes!

    'Enchanted' charms boxoffice

Wins five-day frame with $50 million

    By Carl DiOrio

    "Enchanted"
    UPDATED 1:26 p.m. PT Nov. 25, 2007

Disney's family romancer "Enchanted" had a magical holiday weekend, debuting atop the domestic boxoffice with an estimated $50 million during the five-day frame.

That's the second-biggest boxoffice feast ever over the holiday-lengthened Thanksgiving weekend, behind the $80.1 million performance by Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story 2" in 1999. Over the three-day weekends following their respective Turkey Days, "Toy Story 2" grossed $57.4 million and "Enchanted" rung up $35.3 million.
Miramax expanded the Coen brothers' "No Country for Old Men" by 712 theaters Wednesday for a total of 860 to gross $11 million for the five-day frame. That 10th-place performance carried the cume for the platforming film to $16.6 million.

Miramax president Daniel Battsek said the platform rollout for "No Country" is working well and will continue up until Christmas.

"We've had a couple of weeks of broadening out, (and) it's very encouraging," Battsek said.

"No Country" will add another 200 or so runs in two weeks, he estimated.

Domestic leader "Enchanted" posted a respectable day-and-date foreign debut with $7 million at 1,000 in eight markets.

"Enchanted" conjured up a first-place $3.7 million in Spain, $1.8 million in Russia and $706,000 in Singapore. Disney's opting for a gradual release, going into France and Switzerland next weekend and opening in most markets by the end of the year.

    Re: 'Enchanted's box office tale

The musical fairy tale "Enchanted" gave the movie industry something to be thankful for over the holiday weekend: a hit.
Disney often targets the Thanksgiving span to launch key pictures, whereas its rivals typically use the weekend before the holiday to get a head start. In 2006, for example, Thanksgiving weekend's top movies were holdovers "Happy Feet" from Warner Bros. and "Casino Royale" from Sony, while Disney's thriller "Deja Vu" was the strongest of the new releases.

The industry's five top openings ever for the holiday period all were distributed by Disney, including record-holder "Toy Story 2," which grossed $80.1 million in 1999. "Enchanted" ranks a distant second, followed by "A Bug's Life," "Unbreakable" and the 1996 version of "101 Dalmatians."

"Enchanted" drew a heavy contingent of family filmgoers, as expected, but Disney said it played broadly, with almost half the audience over age 25. Enthusiastic reviews helped: RottenTomatoes.com said 93% were positive.

The movie co-stars Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden and Susan Sarandon, but critics are calling it a star-making vehicle for Adams the way "Mary Poppins" was for Julie Andrews.

That film has made nearly $60 million and will bring in quite a bit more with DVD and cable sales.

It should be noted that "Underdog" was put into development under Eisner.

    Re: 'Enchanted's box office tale

Disney definitely is the ruler of Thanksgiving weekend movies. And Enchanted was awesome. It went up against some fairly well hyped movies too and did amazingly well out of it all.

Our revels now are ended. These our actors, As I foretold you, were all spirits and Are melted into air, into thin air: And, like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself, Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve And, like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep. mycroft16 on Twitter

Leftovers will prevail at box office

    'Enchanted' expected to top weekend

    By Pamela McClintock, Dave McNary
    Variety
    November 29, 2007

Thanksgiving leftovers are expected to feed most of the weekend box office, with Hayden Christensen-Jessica Alba thriller "Awake" the only new wide release in a welcome respite from the otherwise overcrowded fall.

Disney's princess tale "Enchanted" is expected to cast the most winning spell. Amy Adams starrer won the five-day Thanksgiving frame with a $50 million haul; cume was $52.5 million through Wednesday, according to Rentrak.
    Int'l fare
Two comedies aimed at families -- "Bee Movie" and "Enchanted" -- will widen internationally during the frame. "Bee Movie" goes into Mexico, Spain and Taiwan after taking in $12 million from Malaysia, Poland, Russia, Singapore; "Enchanted" goes into France, Malaysia and Portugal with $10 million banked from seven markets.
