The 35th Annual Annie Awards nominees announced

BURBANK, CA (December 3, 2007) – The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, announced nominations today for the 35th Annual Annie Awards recognizing the year’s best animation across film, television, commercials, video games and short subjects.

In the feature categories, Pixar Animation Studios' "Ratatouille" leads the field this year with 13 nominations including Best Animated Feature as well as individual nominations for directing, writing, character animation, animated effects (two nominations), production design, storyboarding, character design, character animation, music and voice acting (three nominations). Sony Pictures Animation’s “Surf’s Up” follows with 10 feature nominations for feature, animated effects, animation production artists, character animation (two nominations), character design, and directing.

Rounding out the Best Animated Feature category are DreamWorks Animation’s “Bee Movie,” Sony Pictures Classics’ “Persepolis,” and Twentieth Century Fox’s “The Simpsons Movie.”

Congratulations to Glen Keane! Certainly well deserved, and hopefully he
will continue to make a great influence in animation for many years to come!

And glad to see Meet the Robinson's did obtain a few nominations, although
I think it was much better than the Bee Movie, and should have been nominated
for best feature in it's place.

It's fun to see Eartha Kitt continues to be nominated for her voice work
of Yzma. Her voice is just perfect for the character!

Patrick Warburton, I initially loved him as Kronk, but Patrick has become,
well he's become a "cartoon voice whore" over the last several years ~
I am so sick and tired of him doing voices in practically every animated
show produced over the past five years. He doesn't deserve any more
nominations. All his characters are the same.

Patton Oswalt got a nomination for Remy ~ and he should probably win
Surprised by Janeane Garofalo's nomination.
Pleasantly surprised by Ian Holm's nomination for voicing Skinner, who
was one of my favorited new animated characters this year. He had one
of my favorite lines in any animated movie this year.

Eddie Murphy got a nomination for doing Donkey again in Shrek the Halls.
bleah, I've had donkey overload this year. He doesn't deserve the nomination
(ok, maybe I'm still upset with him being a major reason for the making the
Haunted Movie suck)

Glad to see that SURF'S UP is getting the recognition it deserves... but horrified that Shrek is still getting up there.

As for the Disney short films nominated, where could I have seen those??? I really enjoyed YOUR FRIEND THE RAT by Pixar. Reminded me of the old disney shorts.

I am partial to Bitter Films' short film though because I worked with Don Hertzfeldt in my college days.

Hope Patton Oswald wins for Remy. Just such a perfect voice for the character. But surprised Julie Kavner nominated for Marge but no Dan Castellaneta for Homer.

And Eartha Kitt as Yzma? I haven't seen too much of the television show, but really she was perfect in the movie. I hope she keeps that same level of zaniness.

Ratatouille Cooks Up A Winning Recipe
At The Annie Awards

A gourmet rat was the big cheese at the 35th celebration, winning 9 Annie Awards. Honoring the best in animation for 2007, the annual gala event was held on February 8, 2008 at UCLA's Royce Hall.

"Ratatouille," Pixar Animation's tale of a rat who wants to become a chef, won the award for best feature production. Other nominees in the same category were DreamWorks' insect story "Bee Movie," Sony Pictures' penguin-powered "Surf's Up," Sony Pictures Classics' coming-of-age chronicle "Persepolis" and 20th Century Fox's "The Simpsons Movie."

"Ratatouille" also won writing and directing for Brad Bird, best voice acting for Ian Holm, best character animation, music, storyboarding, and production design.

The success of "Ratatouille" was followed by "Surf's Up." The story about surfing penguins won for animated effects and animation production artist.

The best-picture winner has gone on to win the Academy Award for animated feature every year but one since the Oscars added the category in 2001.

In the television categories, Nickelodeon's "El Tigre" won for best animated production for children and character design, and ShadowMachine's "Robot Chicken" won for character animation and directing.

I think Ian won over Patton because he was being more of a character and Patton Oswalt was being more or less his own voice.


And while the songs may have helped the emotions in Meet the Robinsons and the score by Danny Elfman was fun and light, it's all very formulaic. The score for Ratatouille is incredible and and very different in style and flavor and supports the film without taking it over.

I was pleased to see that both Glen Keane and John Canemaker received Winsor McCay Awards for "career contributions to the art of animation."

Keane, the son of "Family Circus" creator Bil Keane, is a long-time Disney animator whose credits include The Great Mouse Detective, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and Tarzan.

Canemaker is a talented animator in his own right, but he's even better known as an animation historian and educator. He's written nine animation books including "Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men and the Art of Animation"and "The Art and Flair of Mary Blair." He's also provided commentary on Disney DVD releases including The Fantasia Anthology, Beauty and the Beast and Dumbo.

Two well-deserved awards. Congratulations gentlemen.
