Peter Jackson, New Line, and MGM to produce two-part "The Hobbit"

    It's happening! FINALLY!!!!

Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema Join With MGM to Produce 'The Hobbit'
    December 18, 2007: 11:00 AM EST

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Academy Award(R)-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson; Harry Sloan, Chairman and CEO, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. ; Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of New Line Cinema have jointly announced today that they have entered into the following series of agreements:

    (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20011119/MGMLOGO)

-- MGM and New Line will co-finance and co-distribute two films, "The
Hobbit" and a sequel to "The Hobbit." New Line will distribute in
North America and MGM will distribute internationally.
-- Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh will serve as Executive Producers of two
films based on "The Hobbit." New Line will manage the production of
the films, which will be shot simultaneously.
-- Peter Jackson and New Line have settled all litigation relating to the
"Lord of the Rings" (LOTR) Trilogy.

Said Peter Jackson, "I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line. 'The Lord of the Rings' is a legacy we proudly share with Bob and Michael, and together, we share that legacy with millions of loyal fans all over the world. We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth. I also want to thank Harry Sloan and our new friends at MGM for helping us find the common ground necessary to continue that journey."

"Peter Jackson has proven himself as the filmmaker who can bring the extraordinary imagination of Tolkien to life and we full heartedly agree with the fans worldwide who know he should be making 'The Hobbit,'" said Sloan, MGM's Chairman and CEO. "Now that we are all in agreement on 'The Hobbit,' we can focus on assembling the production team that will capture this phenomenal tale on film."

Bob Shaye, New Line Co-Chairman and Co-CEO comments, "We are very pleased we have been able to resolve our differences, and that Peter and Fran will be actively and creatively involved with 'The Hobbit' movies. We know they will bring the same passion, care and talent to these films that they so ably accomplished with 'The Lord of the Rings' Trilogy."

"Peter is a visionary filmmaker, and he broke new ground with 'The Lord of the Rings,'" notes Michael Lynne, New Line Co-Chairman and Co-CEO. "We're delighted he's back for 'The Hobbit' films and that the Tolkien saga will continue with his imprint. We greatly appreciate the efforts of Harry Sloan, who has been instrumental in helping us reach our new accord."

The two "Hobbit" films -- "The Hobbit" and its sequel -- are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, with pre-production beginning as soon as possible. Principal photography is tentatively set for a 2009 start, with the intention of "The Hobbit" release slated for 2010 and its sequel the following year, in 2011.

The Oscar(R)-winning, critically-acclaimed LOTR Trilogy grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide at the box-office. In 2003, "Return of the King" swept the Academy Awards(R), winning all of the eleven categories in which it was nominated, including Best Picture -- the first ever Best Picture win for a fantasy film. The Trilogy's production was also unprecedented at the time.

    YES!!!

I would not have wanted, or have seen The Hobbit without PJ's involvement. It would have been wrong.

I would have probably seen it in theatres ONLY if Ian McKellen were involved. If Ian and Pete were out, then I would have waited to rent it.

Speaking of McKellen - is he ready to dust off that old blue wizard hat?

What an amazing coincidence. I was just reading an article earlier discussing how many flops New Line had this year. The latest of course being what they thought would be their next big LOTR style franchise, Golden Compass. The author of the article suggested they might want to resolve their issues with Jackson and get him back on board for this sooner rather than later for the sake of their jobs. Sure enough, we get this announcement.

I'm quite excited of course at the thought of these new films, but the timing sure is interesting.

Yes!!! This makes me so excited especially since I thought this project had completely fallen apart.

    I thought the same thing.

Which is part of the reason I wasn't interested in seeing Golden Compass. Just looked like a cheap LOTR knock-off of a book that wasn't very popular here in the states.

There are supposed to be TWO Hobbit movies - BUT as I see it maybe
Simarillion come before the Hobbit??? Simarillion tells of how the elven kingdoms came to be - the true love between the elven king and mortal princess (who Tolkein wrote about himself and his wife), then the Hobbit and going into the mountain and finding the ring - then the trilogy of Lord of the Rings

At least I think thats how it went.........

Then it would go with pre-prequel Simarillion, the prequel Hobbit to complete the books?

If Peter Jackson doesn't direct then who? the guy who directed the Pirates movies, maybe - Tim Burton??? well then the Hobbit will be very dark and weird, so maybe not - Speilberg? Landis?

I doubt the Simarillion will get its own flick. I'm guessing they're just going to be splitting the Hobbit into two movies. There's a lot of material to cover in that book - so cutting it in half would be a good idea.

And I can't see Peter Jackson not directing it. I'm guessing they're just still in discussion about how much he'll get paid to direct it on top of producing and writing the screen adaptation.

Re: Peter Jackson, New Line, and MGM to produce two-part "The Hobbit"

Supposedly, the idea is for one film to be the Hobbit and the other to take place some between those events and the Rings trilogy. Some sort of connecting story. That idea could just be a portion of the second film though combined with parts of the Hobbit. I'm not sure.

The reason Jackson directing is in question is because he already had a pretty full slate at the moment. He's currently in production on a film and then moves on to working with Speilberg on a trilogy of Tin Tin films. I'm not sure when he finishes up with all of that. Perhaps he'll allow someone else to work on the script while he's filming his other pictures and then come on just to direct. Either that or he could just wind up being a consultant/producer on the Hobbit films. Just having him involved though puts them in a good place, because other key players will be more inclined to come back aboard the project based on his involvement.

I don't like that idea. They should stick to the books and stop trying to make up extra bits of story. That was a big complaint with people in the LOTR films - messing with the Faramir storyline and adding extra parts to the Aragorn/Arwen story that were unneccessary and out of place.

There's no need to make a film connecting The Hobbit and LOTR.

I didn't say i liked the idea, it's just one of the ideas I've seen floating around for a while now.

These films wouldn't work for me without McKellen. He alone is Gandalf. Period.

That aside, I'm really having trouble visualizing the Hobbit and a sequel based on the book alone. I mean....it was written in such a different style than the trilogy. The elves are almost different creatures entirely. And the dwarves and the dragon, and ...I'm not seeing this like I did with the trilogy. I'll admit that Peter did the impossible with the triloghy...but the Hobbit? Yikes.

    Maybe he'll surprise me.

Re: Peter Jackson, New Line, and MGM to produce two-part "The Hobbit"

I'd like Peter Jackson to direct but he's been so adament about not directing - so I'm thinking of other directors with his kind of BIG vision to do it - there are only three directors that come to mind - the director of the pirates movies, Speilberg and Landis
