    The Official Coraline Thread

Welcome to the Coraline thread. Coraline is the new stop-motion animated film by Henry Selick (Nightmare Before Christmas) based off of the wonderful Neil Gaiman children's book of the same name.

The first bit of animation has been released over on Neil Gaiman's webpage. It is spectacular. Trust me, this is going to be excellent just for the animation. With the incredible story behind it, this might be one of the best pictures of next year. Here is a link to the clip.

remember it is stop motion animation, not computer animation. It makes NBX look like a caveman hitting 2 sticks together.

Love this book! It's my read-aloud book in my language arts class. I just found out about the movie last week! (And it's non-Disney, which means I'll ultimately be able to show it at school when it's available.)

Interesting indeed but I dare say that the little bit in the clip provided is not showing the quantum leap forward from Nightmare Before Christmas that talk of. In fact, the ghost character effect looks like a direct reference to NBC. Until more of the writing is reveled I'd have have to hold off from jumping for joy. In this age of computer rendering, only through strong scripts have the stop-mo efforts really taken centre stage.

All that said... YAHOO, more stop-motion, thank you, thank you for the info.

Well the writing has been revealed. Read the book.

As far as the quantaum leap forward in animation look at how Coraline breathes. Its the little movements that catch my attention.

The gorgeous trailer for the film ran with 'Beowulf' in 3-D.
Focus Features is scheduled to release it sometime next year, can't wait.

I'm so excited that I got to read this book to at least three classes of kids...before it became a movie. That's hard to do these days!

I'm not quite sure I agree completely. I mean, yeah, Coraline's breathing is pretty cool and helps to bring the film to life, but that instantly gets destroyed by how rudimentary the mouth movements seem.

Furthermore, not to be a smart alec, but I would certainly hope that processes and procedures for something (even something as basic as stop motion) would advance over 15 years.

Frankly, though, one of the first things I thought when I watched that clip was "Is this really stop motion?" That notion is a good thing and a bad thing. First, it means the stop motion is really good. But secondly, it means that the stop motion may be too good. After all, at the point where you can confuse stop motion for CGI, the justification for going with stop motion is questionable. Granted, it has a lot more charm, but it's also a heck of a lot more time consuming and probably more costly.

With that said, it looks great, and I can't wait to see it. Haven't read the book yet though.
